Story

In 1993, the Faculty of Management was opened at St. Petersburg State University - the first business school in Russia, which is a university faculty. Initially, the faculty had 33 bachelor's students and 4 teachers on staff. The first dean of the school was Professor Yu. V. Pashkus, a famous Russian scientist in the field of financial management.

In 2007, by order of the Government of the Russian Federation, the Higher School of Management was created on the basis of the Faculty of Management. The school was created within the framework of the national Education project as one of two business schools. The second school listed in the program is Skolkovo. Under his leadership, GSOM received international accreditations EQUIS, EPAS and AMBA, and became the only representative of Russia in the global alliances of leading business schools CEMS and PIM. All doors are open for applicants. The opportunity to get the desired profession is absolutely real, you just need to score the required number of points according to the Unified State Examination results and have the necessary skills. This is not always so easy to do, but the lucky ones who pass the test receive the main prize - a place in the best educational institution. These include the most popular business institution, GSOM SPbSU.

About school

In St. Petersburg back in 1993, on the orders of Rector Merkuryev, the Faculty of Management was opened, which in 2007 would become a famous business school. He was one of 19 links. But initially it was just a trial project, which was given the task of reaching the world level.

GSOM SPbU grew, developed and met the expectations of its creators. In 2012, it acquired the status of the best and only business school in the entire territory of the former Soviet Union that is accredited by EQUIS. It also became the number 1 educational institution in all of Eastern Europe in the field of business. After that, its popularity doubled; many future businessmen dreamed of getting there, despite the fact that the project was quite young.

The school actively cooperates with other faculties, invites professors from the philological department, conducts research and events together with other faculties, etc. It also has teachers from abroad.

GSOM tries to make good acquaintances not only with its “neighbors,” but also with universities in other countries. Already 53 leading universities in Asia, Europe, North and South America have become its partners. About 350 people actively participate in the student exchange program.

There is also a library at GSOM SPbSU. This is a department of the library named after M. Gorky of St. Petersburg State University in the field of management. It has more than 80,000 paper books and 70,000 records.

There are several training programs available:

  1. Bachelor.
  2. Master's degree.
  3. Postgraduate studies.
  4. Executive Education.
  5. Executive MBA.

The school is attracting more and more attention from applicants and is supported in its endeavors by the Academic Council of St. Petersburg State University. People from all over the world come here to study.

Story

The main goal of GSOM SPbU was the development of management in the country, training in proper business management and financial literacy. At first, only 33 students were admitted to the school, and they were taught by 4 professors. As of 2012, there were already 64 teachers. All of them have a decent higher education and are high-class specialists.

In 2007, a separate institution of the GSOM at St. Petersburg State University was officially opened. It shared the proud title of “school” with only one similar institution - Skolkovo.

In 1996, V.S. Katkalo was chosen for the role of dean, who did a lot for the development of the project. Under his leadership, the institution received 3 accreditations. And also began to represent Russia on the world stage of schools related to the study of finance and business. Katkalo led this project for 14 years, and in 2010 he changed his position to vice-rector. In 2012, A.L. Kostin became the new permanent dean.

A Board of Trustees was also elected in 1993. And since 2006, he came under the control and protection of Sergei Ivanov, the man in charge of the administration of the President of Russia. Also on the list of council participants were large businessmen and other influential people. 160 business companies offer internships to GSOM students.

Teaching Staff

About 64 qualified teachers, among them:

  • Ruslan Belyaev is the head of one of the departments of CJSC CB Citibank, part-time teacher of the Department of Financial Affairs and Accounting.
  • Maxim Sokolov is the head of the department of municipal management and the Minister of Transport.
  • Professor Terenty Meshcheryakov is a representative of the administration of one of the districts of St. Petersburg.
  • The dean of the school, Andrei Kostin, is the current president of a large bank.

The manual states that theory is evenly combined with practice. According to reviews of GSOM SPbU, this is indeed the case; students have the opportunity to try out the acquired knowledge in practice.

Dean

Andrey Leonidovich Kostin occupies the main post of the GSOM. But he didn’t get there right away. In 2006, Andrei Leonidovich was a member of the Board of Trustees. In May 2012, he was appointed head of the Department of Finance and Accounting. In December he was selected as dean of this department of the university. The entire teaching staff has high hopes for him in fulfilling the current plan until 2020.

Kostin himself is a major banker, candidate of sciences and chairman of VTB Bank. He was in public service for a long time, but left in 1992 and went into business. Based on the results of 2011, he was the leader among the richest managers in Russia, his income amounted to $30 million per year. It is not for nothing that he takes the place of dean at GSOM St. Petersburg State University; this man knows his business and shares his experience with his future colleagues.

Admission to Bachelor's Degree

For admission you need a passing score at GSOM SPbU for a budget - 88.1, and for a contract - 77.3. The contract ranges from 350 to 450 thousand rubles per year. The average number of places per budget is 80, per paid department - 140. There are two languages of instruction: Russian and English. They teach in Russian in five areas. There are also 2 separate directions that are taught in English. Lists of applicants to GSOM SPbU are usually filled with people who speak English at the TOEFL level.

Master's degree

It was launched for the first time in 1997. GSOM SPbSU master's program offers 3 programs:

  • “Management” - training takes place exclusively in English.
  • “Corporate Finance” - also in English.
  • “Public Management” - in English and Russian.

Bachelor's degree graduates of any university in Russia and other countries are allowed to apply. In addition, there is a “double diploma” program for students of the “Management” department studying for a master’s degree at GSOM St. Petersburg State University.

Postgraduate studies

At this stage of training you can already meet real professionals.

There are 6 budget places on the list of GSOM SPbU for postgraduate studies. Most of the costs are financed by the state. The graduate student is provided with a monthly stipend from 10 to 27 thousand rubles and 150,000 rubles for the entire period of study for participation in scientific conferences.

From the 3rd year there is an opportunity to become a teaching assistant and receive an additional salary.

Another advantage will be the provision of a hostel. GSOM SPbU offers all conditions for comfortable training of talented specialists.

The state covers the costs of all travel related to training. A foreign internship is also paid, from 90 to 300 thousand rubles, duration - 3 months. Well, and, of course, it is useful to make connections and acquaintances that will greatly help in your future career.

Executive

Another type of training for experienced businessmen. The program started in 2000 and is currently very popular. Owners of large companies come here. The age of students is from 36 years. There are 2 programs:

  1. MBA - for individuals. Duration of training - 23 months. The language of instruction is Russian. Businessmen study here remotely, passing a module once a month. Business experience must be at least 8 years.
  2. Corporate program. This training format is available to large companies. The training plan is individual for everyone, and so is the time of classes. This option is available to company managers.

Dormitory

In 2020, it is planned to open a new dormitory for bachelors of St. Petersburg State University. The budget of such a building is 2.7 million rubles, and its area is 20,252 square meters. Reviews about the GSOM SPbU dormitory are most flattering, but many students are confused by the opening date. After all, we still have to live until 2020, and applicants from other cities simply will not be able to enroll before 2020, since they do not have their own apartment. This was discussed even during Putin’s visit to the business school.

The entire complex of buildings is located on the territory of the Mikhailovskaya Dacha. This is a historical site under the control and protection of UNESCO.

At the moment, there are already 22 dormitories, but this is still not enough to accommodate students. Rooms are also divided into several types:

According to the conditions:

  • with a kitchen in the residential block;
  • with a kitchenette in the residential block;
  • no kitchen in the residential block;
  • corridor type.

By placement:

  • one-room;
  • two-room;
  • three-room apartments.

The rooms are equipped with everything you need: bed, bedside table, chair, desk, wardrobe, bookshelf.

The hallway has a hanger, a shelf for shoes and a mirror. The kitchens were also equipped for a comfortable life for students: a dining table, chairs, a dish dryer, a stove, a shelving unit, and a cabinet. There is appropriate furniture, plumbing and fixtures for the toilet and shower. This is how business school students live.

Best business school in Eastern Europe

Training cross

There is a university in Russia that is among the best business schools in the world!

Three pillars and 160 companies

– Sergey Pavlovich, Graduate School of Management of St. Petersburg State University positions itself as a school that stands “on three pillars”: an organizational model, international standards of business education and corporate relations. Please describe them.

– GSOM SPbU is a full-fledged university business school (with the status of a faculty of St. Petersburg State University), which gives the school a number of significant advantages, especially with regard to cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary communications.

We are proud not only of the international team of teachers at our school, but also of our active cooperation with other faculties of St. Petersburg State University. For example, teachers of the Faculty of Philology teach foreign languages here. For the seventh year in a row, together with the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Control Processes of St. Petersburg State University, we have been holding the international conference “Game Theory and Management” with the participation of leading researchers. Our speakers included Nobel laureates in economics Roger Myerson, John Nash, Robert Aumann, and Reinhard Selten.

GSOM SPbU was created in a strategic partnership with the School of Business. Haas University of California, the world's leading business school. Our partners are 53 leading business schools in Europe, Asia, North and South America. Every year more than 350 students take part in the international exchange program.

Strong corporate ties with leaders of Russian and international business and government authorities are one of the main competitive advantages of GSOM SPbU. In 1993, we created the International Board of Trustees of the Faculty of Management of St. Petersburg State University - an unprecedented, pioneering experience for Russian business schools. Since 2006, the Board of Trustees of GSOM SPbU has been headed by Sergey Ivanov, head of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation. Our Board of Trustees includes heads of the federal government, university management and management of leading foreign business schools, top managers of the largest Russian and Western companies. 160 companies provide GSOM SPbU students with a unique opportunity to undergo internships and summer internships.

20 years of creation

– When you created the school in 1993, how did you manage to transfer the model of a foreign business school to Russian soil, and even during such a difficult period of Russian history?

– Yes, there were difficulties. Let me give you an example. In 1999, we opened the first English-language master's program in management in the European ECTS standard in Russia - the Master in International Business (MIB) program. Many people probably no longer remember that in the 1990s, teaching was supposed to be conducted only in Russian. We managed to obtain permission from the Ministry of Education to conduct an experiment at St. Petersburg University. And this experiment was a success. Today, all master's programs are implemented only in English, which allows us to easily accept students from all over the world. And the first master’s program became the “calling card” of GSOM SPbU.

– Please tell us about the teachers of GSOM SPbU.

– The school began with thirty-three students and four full-time teachers. Today there are 64 full-time teachers at GSOM SPbU. More than 90% of our teachers have completed training and internships at leading foreign business schools. Teachers from other faculties of St. Petersburg State University and leading Russian and foreign business schools participate in the implementation of educational programs.

Theories and practices

– A business school cannot develop only in the field of theory. Need practice...

– All educational programs teach and practice. For example, the teacher at the Department of Finance and Accounting is Ruslan Belyaev, the manager of the branch of ZAO CB Citibank in St. Petersburg. The Department of State and Municipal Administration is headed by Maxim Sokolov, Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation. The teacher of the same department, Terenty Meshcheryakov, is the head of the administration of the Frunzensky district, a member of the government of St. Petersburg. Dean of the school, professor of the Department of Finance and Accounting Andrey Kostin - President and Chairman of the Management Board of OJSC VTB Bank.

– Which of the achievements of GSOM SPbU in recent years would you like to especially note?

– 2012 was rich in achievements. I would like to mention only two of them. Obtaining international institutional accreditation EQUIS. The European Quality Improvement System is a leading international system for assessing the quality of business schools, established by the European Foundation for Management Development. Thus, we became the first and currently the only business school in the entire post-Soviet space to be awarded EQUIS accreditation. And this means Russian business education reaching the international level, the opportunity to compete with the world's leading business schools.

And second: in 2012, GSOM St. Petersburg State University, according to the international EdUniversal rating, became business school No. 1 in Eastern Europe and, for the fourth year in a row, in Russia.

Star lecturers

– Among the lecturers and top managers of leading Russian and foreign companies is Valery Gergiev. What does Valery Abisalovich teach businessmen?

– One of the key qualities of a modern manager is strong leadership skills. For a number of years, GSOM SPbU has been implementing the “Leadership as a Way of Life” project, within the framework of which meetings are organized with businessmen, politicians, athletes, and cultural figures. It was in this capacity that we invited the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiev.

– What is the role of the Board of Trustees in the development of GSOM SPbU?

– Our Board of Trustees forms the development strategy for GSOM SPbU and attracting financial resources, participates in the development and implementation of educational and scientific programs of GSOM SPbU, promotes the integration of the best Russian and world practices in business education.

– Why was Andrey Kostin elected dean of GSOM SPbU?

– Andrey Leonidovich Kostin has been a member of the Board of Trustees of GSOM SPbU since 2006, a professor at the Department of Finance and Accounting at SPbU since May 2012, and dean of GSOM SPbU since December 2012.

The election of Andrey Kostin as dean is an important stage in the development of GSOM SPbU. In essence, working as a dean is a continuation of his activities as a member of the Board of Trustees, but at a qualitatively different level. We are confident that Kostin’s authority in the business community will contribute to solving the ambitious tasks set for GSOM SPbU within the framework of the development program of St. Petersburg State University until 2020.
