The unique nature and quality of the ski slopes make the local ski resorts unique in their kind, and here both extreme sports lovers and those who would like to spend the winter holidays with the whole family will find entertainment to their liking. In this article we have selected the 5 most attractive ski resorts in Finland. Why do the northern Finnish regions attract skiers so much? Let's try to figure it out.

Snowy region and polar paradise

Along with Iceland and Norway, Finland is the northernmost country on the European continent. More than a quarter of its territory is generally located beyond the Arctic Circle. Here you can find different types of landscapes - from steppes, tundra and forests to arctic landscapes, and of course, to snow-capped mountains.

The mountains here are found mainly in the northern part of the country, in the homeland of Santa Claus himself, in the region known as Lapland. By the way, the slopes here are relatively low. The highest peak in the country - the slope of the Khalti hill reaches 1324. The peaks on which the ski slopes are laid are even lower - from 500 to 1000 m, and even less.

However, this type of mountainous terrain is considered very successful for winter skiing, the season of which lasts here more than 200 days a year - from October to the end of April. In general, Finnish slopes are gentle, but at the same time long. This is an ideal option for all beginners, or for those who are planning to ski with children.

There are 72 ski resorts in the country, but we have selected a list of the 5 most popular places for winter sports recreation. In our choice, we were based on such indicators as interest from the point of view of visiting, popularity among tourists, infrastructure and trail capabilities.

Hand

We give first place to this particular resort, because we found it the most interesting, and we’ll tell you why.

Another name for the place is Kuusamo-Ruka, this winter sports center is considered one of the most elite, and at the same time, the most popular among domestic tourists. The highest height is 492 m., and the maximum height difference is only 201 m. This type of terrain is ideal for flat skiing (total length - 160 km). Here 34 descents, which can be reached using one of 21 funiculars. But there are also two springboards for extreme sports enthusiasts.

Also s Here you can ride a traditional reindeer sleigh or take a snowmobile ride. Renting snowboards here will be quite expensive, so it’s best to do it at home, in your hometown. So, renting equipment in St. Petersburg in our showroom will cost several times less than what they will offer you at the foot of the route - fact!

How to get there:

The distance from Ruka to St. Petersburg is 1010 km. The place can be reached either through the capital, Helsinki, along highway number 5 (850 km). Another option is to go through the nearest airport to Kuusamo, and from there towards Ruki by bus that runs from the airport. The third option is by train with the arrival point at Taivalkoski station.

Levi

Perhaps Levi can be considered an exception in the list of Finnish complexes, since it was created in the image of its Alpine counterparts. The highest point is 531 meters, with a maximum elevation difference of 325 m. It is considered the best center for winter sports, which is confirmed by the fact that the World Slalom Competition is held here every year at the very beginning of the season, in November, by the International Ski Federation.

In Levi you can visit 2 snow parks at once, and ride on 48 ski slopes, as well as climb using 27 cable cars. Only professionals are allowed on 4 tracks, 10 of them are purely children's slides, the remaining slopes are for skiers of any skill - both experienced and beginners.

The record length reaches 2.5 km, when the longest funicular is more than 1660 m. There are also trampolines and other entertainment for fans of extreme sports and stunts.

How to get there:

Levi is located near the village of Sirkka, at the foot of the mountain with the same name - Levi, in the Lapland region. You can get to the place either by plane (Kittilä airport) or by train (from the final railway station Kollari).

One of the oldest, but at the same time very popular ski centers in the country, whose history goes back more than half a century. The slopes of the resort, as well as the area itself, are located on six hills, which themselves represent a unique landscape.

The maximum height of the area is 718 m. The complex has 63 slides, among which the longest reaches 3 km. 6 slides are considered easy and are intended for beginners, and another 6 of them are exclusively for professionals.

There are 28 lifts on the territory, including gondola lifts. A notable feature of the local ski lifts is that some of them have... saunas! On the way, you can go up the slope and steam a little, and then, with the breeze, go down again to the foot.

How to get there:

Located near the Levi complex, also in western Lapland. At the foot of the mountains are the villages of Ekäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi. By plane, Kittilä or Pajala Ylläs Airport can be reached in less than an hour. By train you should also get off at Kolari railway station.

Pyhä-Luosto

This park is named in honor of the two ridges on which ski tracks are laid. But many people come to visit Pyhä-Luosto as a nature reserve, with a unique natural landscape and relict forest. The highest points of the park: Noitatunturi - 540 meters, and Ukko-Luosto - 514 meters. The maximum difference in slope heights: near Pyhä - 280 meters, while Luosto is slightly less - 230 m.

There are 10 slides on the slopes of Pyhä, with a maximum length of 1800 m. The number of lifts is 7. There is also a snowboard park here, as well as a flat ski track with a length of 75 km. On the neighboring mountain Luosto there are only 7 slopes and the longest one is 1600 meters. However, the length of the flat ski track reaches 95 km. The mountain is reached using 4 rope tow lifts.

How to get there:

Although the resort is located in the province of Lapland, it is perhaps the most northern ski resort in the world, located just 53 km from the Arctic Circle. The nearest airport is in the town of Rovaniemi, by train get off at the railway station - Kemijärvi.

Imatra

Resorts near the town of Imatra are especially popular among Russian tourists, in particular among winter sports enthusiasts from St. Petersburg. From the Northern capital to the destination - only 195 km, and from Vyborg even less - 65 km. Many people rent alpine skis and rent snowboards right in St. Petersburg, since it is several times cheaper than abroad, albeit nearby.

There is also a cool hotel with a water park, we recommend visiting it! And of course, don’t forget to stop at a fish store along the way :)

The ridges here are relatively low (height ranges from 60 to 70 meters), but the trails are comfortable and well equipped. FreeSki Park has 6 illuminated trails, including a separate sledding hill. Another park, Myllymaki, also includes 6 illuminated slopes, ski lifts (including a children's one), and sledding hills.

How to get there:

The city of Imatra is located near the southeastern border of Finland and Russia. The road from St. Petersburg in a straight line takes about 3 hours.

Ski resort Myllymäki

Resort Description

The closest cities to the resort are Imatra (about 15 km) and Lappeenranta (about 20 km). This proximity makes Myllymäki very popular among tourists, because there is a lot of entertainment in these two cities. Among them are the ruins of an ancient fortress, a water park, and a waterfall, which Catherine the Great once specially came to see. And the resort itself can be considered one of the region’s attractions. Excursions are organized here on weekends from the same Lappeenranta and Joutseno.

Imatra is located on the shores of Finland's largest lake, Saimaa. It is believed that tourism in Imatra began with a visit to the Imatrankoski waterfall by Empress Catherine II and her retinue in 1772. Soon it became fashionable for the St. Petersburg nobility to “take a ride to the doorstep.”

The Vuoksi River flowing within the city, which originates in Lake Saimaa and flows into Lake Ladoga, forms numerous rapids and the powerful Imatrankoski waterfall. If earlier this grandiose natural phenomenon could be observed in its natural form, then after the construction of a hydroelectric power station in 1929, the waterfall Imatras turned into a tourist attraction. The free fall of water into the canyon occurs on an hourly basis: from June 8 to August 25, daily at 19.00, on Sunday at 15.00. In August, a special display is organized when a raft with a huge fire is launched down the waterfall. On New Year's Eve, Sylvester's performance is staged: the waterfall "turns on", fireworks thunder and sparkle. The canyon itself, strewn with granite boulders, looks impressive at any time of the year. The Imatra Falls are surrounded by Kruununpuisto Park, the oldest nature reserve in Finland.

Holidays in Imatra is very diverse and you can find entertainment for every taste. Imatra has water park "Magic Forest" with the effect of thunderstorms and rain at the Imatran Kylpulya Hotel, where you can have a great time. The Imatra water park has a swimming pool, a mini-pool, a slide for children, saunas, a Turkish bath, a jacuzzi, and a hydromassage. Even the smallest ones can’t help but like such a vacation. Tropical warm water relieves stress with its noise, a jacuzzi relaxes and brings pleasure, a sauna has a beneficial effect on the body and fills it with strength. In addition to the water park, Imatra has aquatic center "Imatran Kylpyla" (Imatra Kulpulya Spa) where there are two swimming pools, cascades, a jacuzzi, hydromassage, a sun terrace, a Finnish sauna, a Turkish bath, a gym, table tennis, and other types of recreation. Spa center in Imatra offers hydrotherapy and wellness treatments: massages, herbal baths, inhalations, acupuncture.

Weather in Imatra
You can watch how the weather in Imatra changes - from a sunny day to a tropical downpour and again to a sunny day.
