Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. Taxi from Shanghai Pudong Airport

Shanghai FIR is an important airport in China. This modern airport plays an important role in transport infrastructure. Shanghai FIR is very important for the people and government of China.

International IATA ICAO codes in Shanghai FIR

Many airports have international codes IATA and ICAO. The IATA international airport code is a three-letter unique identifier designating airports. All countries of the world use such codes. The distribution of codes is carried out by the organization IATA (International Air Transport Association). You can find these codes on your luggage labels. They are the ones who prevent your luggage from getting lost and ensure that it arrives at Shanghai FIR.

The ICAO code is a 4-character identifier received by each airport where international traffic is carried out. This code is issued by the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization). These codes are used for airspace control and flight planning. It is not like the IATA code, which is used primarily as a code used on airline displays, baggage tags, and other common situations.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport is an international airport located 45 km east of the central part of the city.

The airport is a transit hub for Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, Shanghai Airlines and Spring Airlines. More than 125 international airlines regularly use Shanghai Airport for their cargo and passenger flights. Regular, charter and seasonal flights operate from the airport.

general information

Shanghai Pudong Airport was opened in 1999 in the area of the same name in the east of Shanghai. The main Hongqiao International Airport at that time could no longer cope with the increased flow of passengers, and the construction of a new air harbor became necessary. At the end of 2016, Pudong Airport became the second largest airport in terms of traffic volumes after the main airport in Beijing.

Pudong Airport received the PVG code according to the IATA encoding.

Pudong International Airport, September 2004

Pudong International Airport(Chinese: 浦东国际机场, pinyin: Pǔdōng Guójì Jīchǎng, pal. : Pudong Guoji Jichang listen)) is a new airport in Shanghai (China), located in the eastern part of the Pudong district.

The airport has two main passenger terminals, flanked on both sides by three parallel runways. The airport's master plan calls for a third passenger terminal, a satellite terminal and two additional runways by 2015, which will increase capacity from 60 million passengers annually today to 80 million, as well as 6 million tons of cargo. In the city, the German company Transrapid, specializing in the construction of magnetic levitation train lines, built the world's first passenger route of this type of transport, connecting Pudong International Airport and the Longyang Lu metro station. Trains on the line reach a speed of 430 km/h, covering a distance of 30 km in 7 minutes 20 seconds. The airport is open 24 hours a day, which is unusual for Chinese airports.

The airport is the main hub for China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines, as well as the main international hub for Air China. In 2007, the airport handled 28.92 million passengers, 45% higher than the 20 million capacity of Terminal 1, which was the only operational terminal during this period, making the airport the third busiest airport in China. At the same time, Pudong carries more international passengers than Beijing Capital International Airport, ranking 29th in the world and 2nd in China by this indicator, in 2007 this figure was 17,518,790 international passengers 2007, 9.0% more than in the previous year year. In addition, Pudong is a major hub for cargo transportation, with 2,494,808 tons of cargo transported in 2007, ranking 5th in the world. Freight traffic in 2007 increased by 15.5%, and after the opening of the cargo terminal in the first half of 2008 it should increase even more.

Story

Early years

Pudong Airport Terminal 1 interior

Before Pudong International Airport began operating, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport was Shanghai's main airport. In the 1990s, the expansion of Hongqiao became impossible, since the surrounding area of the airport was already occupied by urban development. As a result, the government had to look for an alternative to Hongqiao Airport in order to accommodate all its international flights. A suitable site was identified on the coast of Pudong, a developing area east of Shanghai. A grant of 40 billion yen (about 400 million US dollars) from Japan was attracted for the construction of the airport.

Designed by architect Paul Andreu, the airport opened on October 1, after which all international flights from Hongqiao Airport, as well as regional flights to Hong Kong and Macau, were transferred to it. The first phase of airport construction began in October 1997 and took two years, with an investment of 12 billion yuan (US$1.67 billion). The airport, located 30 km from the center of Shanghai, covers an area of 40 km². The first phase of the project included the construction of one Category 4E runway (4000mx60m), two parallel taxiways, an 800,000 m² apron, 76 aircraft stands and a 50,000 m² cargo warehouse.

The second runway was opened on March 17, the third will begin operation in 2008, and construction of the fourth runway is currently in the planning stages. Construction of the second terminal has now been completed; it was opened on March 26. The construction of a third terminal is currently only being planned. The master plan calls for the construction of three terminals, two satellite concourses and five parallel runways, resulting in the airport's capacity to handle 100 million passengers per year.

International flights to Hongqiao Airport resumed in October 2007 with flights to Tokyo-Haneda, and flights to Gimpo International Airport in Seoul began in November 2007. Their goal was to create a more comfortable experience for business passengers, as flights to Haneda and Gimpo had been the airport's most popular flights for many years. In addition, Hongqiao, Haneda and Gimpo are much closer to MRT stations than their newer but further away international airports Pudong, Narita and Incheon.

Development

In 2004, the airport served nearly 500 flights a day, carrying more than 21 million passengers a year to and from China's most populous city. Shanghai Pudong International Airport is the sixth busiest airport in the world and the 29th busiest airport for international passengers.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport is experiencing a constant increase in traffic. In 2002-2003 its cargo turnover almost doubled; growth was 87.3% during this period. In 2002-2006, the airport rose from 26th to 6th place in terms of cargo turnover; its cargo turnover has tripled since 2002. UPS and DHL are expected to open their own cargo processing centers in the coming years, making Pudong the first airport to have two international cargo dedicated centers.

Pudong handles a large number of takeoffs and landings during peak times, so there is a need to accommodate them on the apron due to a lack of parking. A solution to this problem is expected as a result of the second phase of construction (which includes a 2nd terminal, a third runway and a cargo terminal and should be completed before the 2008 Olympic Games). Terminal 2, located behind Terminal 1, opened on March 26 (the same day as the official opening of Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital Airport), increasing the airport's capacity by 40 million passengers per year. After the completion of the second phase of construction, Pudong Airport's capacity is 60 million passengers and 4.2 tons of cargo annually. In the future, a passenger transportation center will be built between Terminals 1 and 2.

Ambitious plans for further development include the construction of an additional fourth and fifth runways, a satellite terminal that will be larger in size than both existing terminals, and additional cargo terminals. Land for a fifth runway and some cargo terminals is currently reserved. The current development program runs until 2015, as a result of which Pudong will become one of the largest airports in the world.

China Southern Airlines announced that they plan to make Shanghai Pudong International Airport their base for 5 Airbus A380 aircraft, but there was no information from China Southern Airlines about creating a hub at the airport.

Infrastructure

Airport boarding gallery, September 2004

The airport is equipped with 28 bridge crossings and 127 parking spaces. There are currently two operational runways; A 4000 meter Category 4E runway and a 3800 meter Category 4F runway capable of accommodating A380s. The third runway will also be rated 4F.

Terminal 1 was built similar to the Kansai International Airport terminal, but shorter and with 28 gates, 13 of which are double gates for double-decker airliners. The appearance of the terminal is wavy. The capacity of Terminal 1 is 20 million passengers per year. It has 204 check-in counters, 13 luggage belts, and a total area of 280,000 m². Terminal 1 received mixed reviews regarding the location of stores, their prices, and the complex layout of restrooms, escalators and routes within the terminal.

Terminal 2, opened on March 26, following the commissioning of the third runway, will increase the airport's capacity to 60 million passengers and 4.2 million tons of cargo annually. Terminal 2 is built similarly to Terminal 1, but has a seagull shape rather than a wave shape. Its dimensions are slightly larger than Terminal 1.

Transport

Transrapid has built a maglev train line from Pudong International Airport to Long Yang Road MRT Station. It was opened in . The maximum speed of the train is 431 km/h, the route length is about 30 km. The transport center will be built at the 3rd stage of construction and will be put into operation in 2015.

The "Green" (second) metro line connects Pudong Airport with Hongqiao Airport (requires a transfer at Jinke Road Station to the opposite side of the station, the first train from Jinke Road towards the airport leaves at 7:30, arrives at 7:57), these works were finished by

Transport from Shanghai Pudong Airport to the city

There are several ways to get from Shanghai Pudong Airport to the city. In total, the journey will take from 7 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the chosen mode of transport.

Important! Please note that Shanghai is an area where very few people can speak English. Therefore, when choosing options with public transport, keep in mind that there will be difficulties at every stage: from buying tickets to getting off at the desired stop.

Buses to Shanghai

Airport Buses operate from Pudong Airport in more than 8 directions. The movement interval is on average 20 minutes. Buses start moving at 7:00-8:00 and end around 19:00-23:00 - the specific time depends on the route number.

There is also a special night bus, the interval of which is 45 minutes. The flight starts at 23:00 and ends 45 minutes after the end of flights.

Ticket prices range from 2 to 30 yuan depending on the distance. It takes a little over an hour to get from Shanghai Pudong Airport to the city by bus. Buses board at the exits of terminals 1 and 2.

Metro to Shanghai

From Shanghai Pudong Airport, trains take the 2nd (green) line of the city metro. The metro operates from 06:00 to 22:00, trains run approximately every 8 minutes. The city center can be reached in about an hour by metro.

Trains of the 2nd (green) line of the city metro depart from the airport

Taxi from Shanghai Pudong Airport

There are 3 main ways to get from Shanghai Pudong Airport to your desired location in the city by taxi: “wild” drivers, official city taxis and online ordering of a transfer via the Internet.

“Wild” drivers begin to actively assault passengers as soon as they leave the customs inspection zone. It is not recommended to contact them because at best you'll get an exorbitant ride.

It will be difficult to communicate with a taxi driver, since 99% of them do not speak other languages other than various dialects of Chinese, and also do not read the Latin and Cyrillic alphabet. The same goes for the vast majority of police personnel.

Taxis at the airport can be found at a special stand

The second way is a city taxi. Here, as in the previous case, almost none of the drivers speak a language other than Chinese. Official tariffs exist, but, seeing a foreigner in front of him, it is rare that a Chinese will resist the temptation to raise the price “a little.”
