The total length of railways in Kazakhstan is 15,341 km. More than 68% of the country's freight turnover and about 57% of passenger traffic in the country are accounted for by this type of transport. In total, there are three main roads in the state - Tselinnaya, Alma-Ata and West Kazakhstan. After the collapse of the USSR, they were all merged into a single corporation. It is called "Kazakhstan Railways".

West Kazakhstan branch

This road runs through the territory of such regions of the country as:

  • Aktobe;
  • Kyzyl-Orda;
  • South and West Kazakhstan;
  • Mangystau.

The West Kazakhstan Railway partially passes through the territory of the Orenburg region of Russia. This branch is controlled from the city of Aktyubinsk.

A little history

This branch was formed in 1977 after the disintegration of the former Kazakh Railway, which had existed in the USSR since 1958.

The first railway line on the territory of Kazakhstan was built at the beginning of the last century. It connected Uralsk and Pokrovskaya Sloboda in the Volga region. That is, it was part of the Moscow - Ryazan - Saratov line. This road, in fact, connected the Southern Urals with the Volga region and the Central regions of the USSR. It passed mainly through the territory of the Ural region. Initially, passengers could travel along it with landing from six stations - Derkul, Peremetnaya, Shipovo, Semiglavy Mar, Rostoshsky, Uralsk.

At first, only low-power foreign-made trains were operated on this section. In 1901, construction of the Orenburg - Tashkent line began. Especially for this road, among other things, a bridge was built across the Ural River.

Subsequently, the Kazakh railway developed almost continuously. Its construction and expansion did not stop even during the Second World War. At this time, the road connected the Kazakh rear with the fronts and the Central regions of the USSR. During the Second World War, for example, the Kandagach - Orsk line was built, which made it possible to transport goods from the Urals and from Siberia to the Caucasus (with transshipment across the Caspian Sea) by the shortest route.

What branches does it border on?

The railways of Kazakhstan are very long. The operational length of the West Kazakhstan branch is a total of 3817 km. This road borders:

  • South Ural Railway (Kanisay, Nikeltau);
  • Privolzhskaya (Aksarai, Ozinki);
  • Alma-Ata (Turkestan);
  • Central Asian (Beineu).

Trains pass along the West Kazakhstan Road, for example, through stations such as Iletsk, Aktyubinsk, Mangyshlak. Passengers can travel along this branch to the large city of Uralsk.

Features of the branch

In terms of freight traffic, the West Kazakhstan road of the largest Tselinnaya road is quite inferior (60%). In terms of transit, it surpasses this branch. The main bulk cargo of the West Kazakhstan road is oil from the famous Mangyshlak fields.

This branch serves areas of the country with predominantly desert and semi-desert terrain and a sharply continental climate. Therefore, during its construction, serious emphasis was placed on improving water supply. During the years of the USSR, as part of the development of the road, the Nugayty-Sagiz water pipeline (52 km) was built and the Kamyshlybash - Aral Sea (169 km) was reconstructed.

Aktyubinsk station (Aktobe): reviews

The passenger terminal of this most important railway station for Kazakhstan is the only railway station in the city. It was built in 1975. Currently, about 40 trains pass through this station.

Passengers rate the work of the Aktyubinsk station, in general, as quite good. Its building is equipped with terminals, displays, and coffee machines. People who have chosen a method of traveling around the country such as the Kazakhstan Railway can comfortably wait for their train on comfortable chairs and benches. Train schedules, information about their arrival and departure - all this information is provided to passengers without any problems.

But there are not very good reviews about the Aktyubinsk station. A total of 6 ticket offices are open at this station. But, unfortunately, they mostly work one by one. Most often, only 2-3 ticket offices serve passengers. Therefore, there are simply huge queues at the station. People can wait for hours to purchase tickets. True, there are also private ticket offices at the station. You can buy tickets here almost without queuing. But at the same time, passengers have to pay, among other things, an additional commission (300 tenge).

This state of affairs was observed at the Aktyubinsk station in 2016. But perhaps the station management will draw conclusions based on numerous complaints from passengers and correct the situation.

Kazakhstan Railway: Aktyubinsk depot

The West Kazakhstan Road is managed, as already mentioned, from this city. Aktyubinsk station, of course, also has its own locomotive depot. Its staff includes 892 people. Diesel locomotives in the Aktobe depot operate 17 shunting units and 58 main ones. The latter includes 10 units. passenger traffic.

In 2004, Aktobe celebrated its 100th anniversary. In honor of this significant event, a monument to the steam locomotive was unveiled on the territory of the organization. In 2010, another similar event took place at the depot. A monument to the driver was erected on the territory.

Uralsk station: description and reviews

At first, this station with turrets in the form of minarets was located quite far from the city itself - in the steppe. During the years of the USSR, Uralsk grew a lot. As a result, the station ended up almost in its very center. Today it is a huge, modern, well-equipped building. In terms of the convenience of passengers, both regular and transit, this station has earned very good reviews. There is even a huge beautiful fountain in his yard.

Passengers also rate the work of the ticket office and station staff as satisfactory. Today, about 26 thousand people depart from this station per year.

Owners of the West Kazakhstan railway

At the moment, this branch, like the entire Kazakhstan railway, belongs, as already mentioned, to the KTZ company. The sole shareholder of this company is the Samruk-Kazyna fund. One hundred percent of the latter's shares belong to the state. The responsibilities of the foundation staff include:

  • management of KTZ activities;
  • solving problems to increase budget transparency.

Samruk-Kazyna does not interfere with the operational work of the railway. The President of NC KTZ JSC for 2017 is Kanat Kalievich Alpysbaev.

Development prospects

Currently, as in the years of the USSR, the management of KTZ (Kazakhstan Railways) sees the main task as increasing the capacity of the West Kazakhstan Railway. In this regard, the most important place is occupied by such measures as the development of district, marshalling and freight stations. Also on this branch, the construction and modernization of radio relay and cable communication lines is being carried out.

Locomotives for Kazakhstani railways are currently assembled directly on the territory of the state. For example, a major supplier of such equipment is the Lokomotiv Kurastyru Zauyty company. Its main facilities are located in Astana.

"KTZ" (Kazakhstan Railways): reviews of work

Passengers had a generally good opinion of the activities of this company. It is believed that in terms of service level, Kazakhstan’s trains are practically in no way inferior to Russian ones, but are not superior to them either. The carriages in KTZ trains are either reserved seats, compartments or luxury. So passengers have the opportunity to travel with a level of comfort that matches their financial situation.

Regarding cleanliness on KTZ trains, there are both positive and negative reviews. In general, the conductors in the company's trains take their work responsibly. Linen and curtains on trains are usually clean. The same applies to the floors in the carriages. The toilets on Kazakh trains are often dirty. This, of course, can be attributed to the disadvantages of KTZ formulations.

Like Russians, residents of Kazakhstan prefer to take home-made food with them on trains. The dishes in KTZ restaurants are usually fresh and quite tasty, but at the same time very expensive. Most passengers rate the work of this company as a solid four.

Crossing the border with Russia

Very often, passengers travel by train from the Russian Federation to Kazakhstan or vice versa. For example, a popular route is Petropavlovsk (Kazakh) - Volgograd. On the West Kazakhstan railway, people travel to Sol-Iletsk, Orsk in the Orenburg region and to many other cities of the Russian Federation.

Most passengers consider the moment of crossing the border to be the most unpleasant, both on Kazakh and Russian railways. Everyone on the train, including children, is searched. In addition, trains stop at border stations, unfortunately, for a very long time (2 hours on the Russian side and about the same on the Kazakh side). Toilets remain closed all this time. It is not allowed to leave the carriages. They wake up passengers for inspection even at night.

Many clients of Russian Railways and KTZ consider this state of affairs not very convenient. But mostly passengers treat the inspection with understanding. After all, in the absence of control, both drugs and weapons can be transported across the border.

The Kazakhstan railway has, among other things, one feature that its customers should know about. Before entering the country, conductors hand out migration cards to passengers with foreign passports. All persons over 16 years of age are required to fill them out. Young children fit into their parents' chart. It is not worth losing this migration document during the entire time you are on the territory of Kazakhstan. Recovery will be associated with great hassle. In addition, the person who loses the card will have to pay a fine.

Today I’ll tell you how to buy train tickets through the official website of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (Kazakh Railways) online.

I’ve been on the official website of the Kazakhstan railway for a long time, to be honest, it used to be, to put it mildly, buggy =). Before my upcoming trip to Kazakhstan, I came in again and was surprised. The guys made a normal human website, with a user-friendly interface and nice design! I wrote to the support service asking if it is possible to buy a train ticket using a Russian Sberbank card. A positive response came literally within a few hours.

There was another option to hitchhike, but there was not enough time for the May holidays, and besides, the prices for tickets on Kazakh trains were a pleasant surprise. However, now you will see everything for yourself. Below I will write a short instruction for purchasing a ticket online on the Kazakhstan Temir Zholy website. All of the above applies to cases when a ticket is purchased for domestic flights or from.

How to buy tickets in Kazakhstan online?

It’s a good idea to read the rules of use and information for passengers; all issues are covered there in some detail. You can buy electronic train tickets from 45 days to 1 hour before departure, so you can plan everything in advance if necessary.

2. You must register (button in the upper right corner); without registration you will not be able to buy a train ticket.

3. Enter the place of departure, arrival, date, and the system will display a list of trains. Here you can already see the running time and prices. For example, I bought a ticket from Pavlodar to Almaty for 4000 tenge or 800 rubles. Moreover, it takes more than a day to travel! Our greedy relatives Russian Railways are quietly standing on the sidelines...

Purchasing a train ticket through the Kazakhstan Temir Zholy website

Of course, there are expensive trains, but they are twice as fast as usual, brand new, apparently made in Italy. But there are only a few of them, such as Almaty-Astana, Almaty-Petropavlovsk.

5. Choose the layout of the carriage and a specific location. Click the “place an order” button.

Buying a train ticket in Kazakhstan on the Internet

6. Next, information about the selected flight appears; here you also need to fill in your passport information. Important! Enter the details of the passport with which you will travel, otherwise you may get confused by mistake. For me, as a citizen of the Russian Federation, an internal passport is enough to travel to Kazakhstan, and it is precisely this data that I entered on the site.

7. After this, you are redirected to the Halyk Bank website, where you will be asked to pay for the ticket order. The procedure is no different from the usual when purchasing online - fill out all the fields carefully, be sure to check all the data!

Redirect to the Halyk Bank website and fill in payment information

As a result, the following page is displayed:

The purchase was successful!

That's all! If such a page loads, it means the ticket was successfully purchased, and the purchase amount will soon be debited from your account. I bought from a Sberbank card, the money was written off at the Sberbank rate of ruble/tenge = 1/4.9. Be sure to print out your electronic train ticket and take it with you!

Buying train tickets in Kazakhstan via the Internet - important details

  • In order to get on a Kazakh train, you will need to go to the ticket office at the station or to a self-service terminal and “exchange” your electronic ticket for a regular one. Electronic check-in for the flight is issued for some trains. I was lucky; for the Pavlodar-Almaty train I needed, electronic registration had already been carried out during the ticket purchase process (this is indicated on the electronic ticket), so I can go straight to the train.
  • The website has a list of stations where it is impossible to issue a ticket purchased online, all of these stations are small, it is unlikely that you will go there, but just keep in mind.
  • There is also a list of addresses of self-service terminals where you can get tickets purchased in advance on the Internet.
  • As far as I know, in Petropavlovsk you cannot get tickets at the ticket office at the station. All due to the fact that this railway station belongs to Russian Railways. The situation there is constantly changing; Russian and Kazakh railways cannot come to an agreement and make life more convenient for passengers. Please note that when departing from Petropavlovsk and arriving in Petropavlovsk, Moscow time is indicated; for all other stations in Kazakhstan, Astana time is indicated.
  • UPD 07/08/2014 You can exchange an electronic ticket for a regular one in Petropavlovsk at the agency ticket offices, which are located near the station. People recommend the Astal agency, +7 7152 365769. Getting a ticket from them costs 370 tenge. (thanks to Denis Mandrov for the information!)
  • Children under 7 years old travel by train in Kazakhstan for free, children from 7 to 15 years old travel at half price.

As you can see, prices for train tickets in Kazakhstan are quite reasonable. To get cheaply from Russia to Kazakhstan, you can, for example, use the train. Or, in a Russian border city, take a bus to the nearest Kazakh one, and from there travel in the manner described above across Kazakhstan and further to Central Asia. These are the pies))
