Hungarian customs regulations. Hungary

The Hungarian Customs is currently part of the “Nemzeti Adoes Vamhivatal” (National Tax and Customs Administration) and such close interaction between these services produces successful results. If you do not want to make your contribution to their successful activities, then before flying to Hungary it is imperative to study the customs rules of Hungary. It should be noted that Hungarian customs rules for air passengers differ from the customs rules applicable to those arriving in Hungary by other means of transport. According to the customs rules of Hungary, duty-free baggage allowances for non-prohibited items worth up to 430 euros have been increased for passengers of international flights (for others only by 300) and the allowance for tobacco products has been increased 5 times. In all other respects, Hungarian customs rules are the same for all passengers.

  • Import and export of currency.
  • Customs duties in Hungary.

Import and export of currency.

We fill out the declaration “Declaration of cash”. Violation of this clause immediately results in confiscation of 10%, 40%, 60% of the amount that was not declared or declared incorrectly (Act XLVIII of 2007 on the implementation of regulation 1889/2005/EC). The form is available in Hungarian and English with instructions for completing it on the back. As a matter of fact, the standard instructions for crossing the EU border are written there. All white fields are filled in by the declarant in capital letters in dark ink (where necessary, one letter/number in each cell); gray fields are filled in by the competent authorities.
The obligation to declare cash when entering and leaving the European Union is part of the EU strategy to prevent money laundering and combat terrorist financing. In Hungary, cash transported within the EU must be declared in accordance with the Currency Act. You must complete this form if you are entering or leaving the European Union with cash of €10,000 or more (or the equivalent in other currencies) [Regulation (EC) No 1889/2005, Article 3( 1)]. When transporting cash across the Hungarian border to or from EU Member States, the above amount is declared upon request by the customs authorities (Article 11b of the Currency Law).
According to Article 2 (2) of Regulation (EC) No 1889/2005, it is necessary to declare:
a) negotiable monetary instruments payable to bearer, incl. such monetary instruments payable to bearer as traveler's checks, negotiable instruments (including checks, bills of exchange and payment orders) issued to bearer, endorsed without restrictions, issued to a fictitious recipient, or in any other form implying the transfer of ownership by delivery, as well as incomplete documents (including checks, bills and payment orders) signed, but without indicating the name of the recipient;
b) currency (banknotes and coins in circulation as a medium of exchange).
In Hungary, declaration is required for the transport of precious metals and precious stones and products with and from them, while to or from EU member states, declaration is carried out when required by customs authorities.
Indication of false, inaccurate or incomplete information is considered a failure to fulfill the above-mentioned obligation and entails the imposition of fines on the signatory or the detention/confiscation of cash by the competent authorities in accordance with Art. 18 (1), art. 18a (1) and art. 20 Currency Law and Articles 3(1) and 9(1) of Regulation (EC) No 1889/2005. Information and personal data are registered and processed by the competent authorities [Regulation (EC) No. 1889/2005, Article 5 (1)] and may be provided to the services referred to in Article 22 of Directive 2005/60/EC. Data processing is carried out in accordance with applicable data protection regulations.

Which goods are subject to mandatory declaration at Hungarian customs?

When passing through customs control, you must enter in the customs declaration:
  • Precious metals, precious stones and products containing them or made from them must be declared.
  • items prohibited for export.
  • goods not intended for personal use.
  • goods imported from outside the EU, the quantity of which exceeds the amount established for exemption from customs duties (tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, medicines and other duty-free goods).
  • goods subject to import bans or restrictions.
If in doubt, you must declare all goods. When entering Hungary from Russia and transporting goods purchased in EU countries, you must keep the receipt in order to avoid paying customs duties and taxes again. If you want to transport these goods to another EU country, you will still have to present them at customs when entering the EU.

Customs duties in Hungary.

When importing goods, travelers must pay import taxes, which are taxes on goods purchased abroad. Depending on the product, these include customs duties and other fees such as value added tax, excise taxes on tobacco, beer or alcohol.
The purchase price is the basis for calculating the amount of import duties. Therefore, you should keep receipts or invoices for goods purchased abroad. If you cannot document the purchase price (for example, the product came to you as a gift), market prices will be used as the basis for estimating the purchase price. If the price includes a value added tax amount, this amount will not be included in the calculation basis if you can prove that the goods were exempt from value added tax in the country where the purchase was made and that you, the buyer, are beneficiaries of this exemption. The amount of customs duties, therefore, depends primarily on the value and duty rate.

What can you bring into Hungary with exemption from customs duties?

Air passengers from Russia are allowed duty-free import through Hungarian customs:
  • Tobacco products (passenger must be 17 years of age or older): 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250 grams of smoking tobacco.
  • Alcoholic drinks (passenger must be 17 years of age or older): 1 liter of strong alcoholic drinks with an alcohol content of more than 22% or 2 liters of alcoholic drinks and aperitifs, champagne or sparkling wine and liqueurs with an alcohol content of up to 22%. Additionally, you can carry 4 liters of wine (not carbonated) or 16 liters of beer.
  • Any items not prohibited for transportation with a total value of up to 430 euros.
  • Medicines in quantities necessary for personal use.

Prohibitions and restrictions on import into Hungary.

According to Regulation (EC) No 206/2009 of March 5, 2009, it is prohibited to transport into Hungary: animals, plants, food products containing animal meat, animal fats, dairy products, products containing more than 5% cocoa.

Hungary is a small and very hospitable European country, known for its beautiful nature and healing springs. According to one of the local legends, if you stick a traveling staff into the ground somewhere, living water will immediately flow from under it. This is almost not fiction, because the country is unique in that there are many healing and thermal springs here.

Hungary is rightly called the “empire of baths”. In addition to popular spa resorts, the country is famous for its ancient architecture, wineries, yacht clubs and excellent cuisine. Here is the famous volcanic one, where lotuses bloom all year round, as well as the largest in Europe.

In our article we will tell you what to take with you to Hungary so as not to overload your luggage with unnecessary things and at the same time not to forget the essentials.

Tips

It is customary to leave tips everywhere

Language

The official language is Hungarian, spoken by more than 97% of the country's residents; many Hungarian residents also speak German and English.

As in any tourist country, Hungary has plenty of all kinds of souvenirs and other products that tourists willingly take home. Even in Budapest there is a separate street (VaciStreet) , filled with shops of national souvenirs, food, ceramics, exclusive goods, etc. But which of all this is useless trash, and which is a special present? Before the trip, I carefully studied this issue.

What should you bring from Hungary?

The minimum set of every self-respecting tourist usually consists of paprika, Hungarian sausages, wine and marzipan. And this is not surprising, because in Hungary has really delicious food and everyone wants to treat their family and friends. But if you want more, you can bring:

  1. Balm “Unicum”- a strong drink infused with 40 herbs and aged in oak barrels. Drink it to strengthen the immune system, adding a couple of spoons to coffee or tea. You can buy this balm only in Hungary. I didn’t like it right away, I only “tried” it at home - it warms me up perfectly on winter evenings!
  2. "Liba Mai" or goose liver. Although it is not the birthplace of this delicacy, it is The food here is simply divine. Of course, the canned version is a little inferior to the restaurant version, but a small jar of liver will be an excellent, and most importantly tasty, gift.
  3. Frötsch is another Hungarian alcoholic drink consisting of soda pop and wine. It won’t be possible to bring ready-made frech, but you can buy a gift set, which includes a siphon, Tokaji wine and soda water.
  4. Gift for football fansball with initials world famous Hungarian football player – Ferenc Puskás. Or you can buy a budget option - a T-shirt with his portrait.

Shopping tricks in Hungary

Most of what I listed You can buy it at the market or in a regular store. But it is worth considering that prices for these goods may vary significantly in different seasons. For example, the largest discounts happen twice a year- at the beginning of spring and at the end of summer. You can save a lot of money at this time.

In general, prices in Hungary are not as high as in other European cities, so shopping in any season won't hurt your wallet too much. And prepare a larger suitcase so you don’t buy an extra one just for the sake of shopping, like I did. ;) I hope my tips will be useful.
