The victory over Sweden in the Northern War required Peter I to urgently develop the conquered territories. The deserted island at the mouth of the Neva attracted the attention of the newly-crowned emperor when he was choosing a location for the future fortress, the core of the new capital. The fortifications were erected according to the latest word in fortification science of the time and would have become a serious obstacle to the enemy. But fate decreed otherwise - the fortress was never attacked, but always served as a prison for state criminals.

    A little history

Peter entrusted the construction of 5 bastions to his comrades - chief foreman Menshikov, Golovkin, Zotov, Trubetskoy, Naryshkin. The 6th, Gosudarev, was to be supervised by Tsarevich Alexei, who later became the first prisoner of the fortress. Peter himself settled nearby in a summer house and daily inspected the progress of construction by boat.

One day, the king was severely scolding careless carpenters, and at that moment a hare, fleeing from the dogs, jumped into his arms. Peter became emotional, pardoned the workers, and ordered them to call the island Hare. This, of course, is a legend, but the monument to the long-eared man stands on a pile sticking out of the water near the Ioannovsky Gate. They say that throwing a coin to the bunny Arseny brings good luck.

    What to see

The entire Peter and Paul Fortress is like a giant exhibit of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg. The best way to start getting acquainted with it is with the excursion “History of the Peter and Paul Fortress”. First, guests view an exhibition of Russian and Swedish maps, drawings and initial plans for fortifications, their models, a collection of carpentry tools, and objects discovered during excavations. Then everyone goes for a walk around the main attractions of the fortress, accompanied by a guide.

The undisputed pearl of the architectural ensemble is the Peter and Paul Cathedral with the Grand Ducal Tomb and the Royal Rooms. Nearby, in the Commandant's House, the Museum “History of St. Petersburg - Petrograd” is located. 1703-1918". The Trubetskoy Bastion prison is one of the most popular objects of the fortress. Only the Museum of Cosmonautics and Rocket Technology in Ioannovsky Ravelin and the “Street of Time” exhibition in the Naryshkin Bastion can compete with it.

Tour of the Peter and Paul Fortress

Peter-Pavel's Fortress - the oldest architectural monument of St. Petersburg, founded on May 27, 1703. The date of the foundation of the fortress is considered the date of the founding of the Northern capital. The history of the city begins with it.The plan for the fortress was developed jointly by Peter I and the French engineer Lambert de Guerin. In 1706, reconstruction of the fortress began according to the design of Guerin and the Swiss architect Domenico Trezzini. In place of the earthen ramparts, stone ones were erected, and at the same time the construction of the cathedral was underway. The Peter and Paul Cathedral occupies a special place in the ensemble of the Peter and Paul Fortress. It was built according to the design of the architect D. Trezzini in 1713-1733. Peter and Paul Cathedral is the tallest architectural structure in St. Petersburg. It is decorated with a gilded spire 122.5 meters high, which is crowned with a weather vane in the form of a flying angel. The modern ensemble of the fortress continued to take shape at the end of the 18th-19th centuries. Thus, the Boat House was built (to preserve the legendary boat of Peter I), the Mint building, where until the end of the 20th century all coins, medals and orders were minted, and other industrial and commercial buildings that made up the ensemble of Cathedral Square.

*** The tour ends at the Peter and Paul Fortress.
