Avatar Park in Singapore. Tree park in Singapore “Gardens by the Bay”

Good afternoon, travelers and wanderlusts! We continue our unique trip to Singapore, a great city-state, which in 50 years has reached unprecedented heights, both literally and figuratively. Today Singapore is the fastest growing city in Southeast Asia. We have already talked about how and what it is. Today we will talk about Gardens by the Bay, or Gardens by the Bay. If you have just arrived at Changi Airport in Singapore, then you can find an inexpensive transfer to your hotel.

From the history of Gardens by the Bay or Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay in Singapore is a natural park covering an area of 101 hectares. The gardens are part of the Singapore government's strategy to transform a "Garden in a City" into a "City in a Garden". In 2006, an international competition for the design of gardens was won by two British companies who were involved in the implementation of the South and East Bays, respectively.

Construction of the gardens began in November 2007. And already in 2011, this wonderful park was opened to the public. This is Singapore's most ambitious project, costing (excluding land) more than US$1 billion. Gardens by the Bay is one of the most popular places in Singapore. In 2015 alone, Gardens by the Bay was visited by more than 20 million people.

How to get to Gardens by the Bay in Singapore

Finding this unique park in Singapore is very easy. The main landmark is the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, which faces directly onto the garden. From the airport you can get here by bus number 36, which will take you directly to Gardens by the Bay. You can also take the MRT: take the Green Line to Bugis Station, and from there change to the Blue Line to Bayfront Station. To make your trip to Singapore especially unique, you can explore the entire city by car.

What to see at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore

Gardens by the Bay in Singapore is a unique natural park covering 101 hectares. In addition to the amazingly beautiful green park where you can walk for hours, you will find a lot of interesting things.

For example, the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest are two domes that you have probably seen from your room window at Marina Bay Sands. The Flower Dome is the largest greenhouse in the world, listed in the Guinness Book of Records. The area of this garden is 1.2 hectares! Inside you will find gardens from various regions of the Earth, including African baobabs, Australian gardens, etc. The greenhouse is open daily from 09:00 to 21:00, the entrance fee is SGD 28 (the ticket gives you access to 2 conservatories: Flower Dome and "cloud forest").

Flower Dome and Cloud Forest Conservatories in Singapore

The Cloud Forest is a huge dome displaying plant life up to 2,000 meters above sea level! On a 35-meter mountain, in addition to all kinds of plants and flowers, there is the world's largest artificial waterfall! Walking along a special path through a mountain and a waterfall, you find yourself in an incredible world that could only be created here in Singapore. This conservatory is also open from 09:00 to 21:00.

But Gardens by the Bay is famous for more than just these unique conservatories. There are so-called super-trees in the park. They are metal structures in the shape of a tree with a height of 25 to 50 meters. The outside of the super trees is entwined with plants. There are more than 162,900 plants of different 200 species on 18 super trees! It's truly unique! A walk between these trees will take you to the future, where technology has made incredible progress. The treetops are topped with solar panels, so the energy accumulated during the day is enough to illuminate the trees at night.

The central super-trees of the park are connected by a bridge: the Skyway, which is located at an altitude of 22 meters. Entrance to the park is free, but if you want to go up to the skyway and walk between the super trees, it will cost you 8 Singapore dollars.

If you come to Singapore with children, then your children will be able to have fun in a park area specially equipped for them. “Kindergartens” are open from 10:00 to 19:00 from Monday to Friday, admission is free. This place provides all possible entertainment for children: animators, people in animal costumes, a water playground with numerous jets of stylized flowers. Here your kids can have fun and relax on a hot day and you can enjoy it with them.

There is also a “Sunny Alley” in Gardens by the Bay, in which cacti and shrubs from the arid regions of the Earth grow. There are more than 1,000 plants of 100 different species on display here. This alley is open daily from 09:00 to 21:00, entry is free.

In addition, on the territory of Gardens by the Bay you will find ponds and small lakes in which white and purple lotuses grow. The picture is very beautiful and picturesque. This place is like heaven on earth, some kind of fairy tale that happens to you in reality. These are the thoughts that will come to you while walking through Gardens by the Bay.

This concludes our journey through a unique Singapore park that will make your dreams come true. Next, we will talk about Singapore at night and the fantastic lighting that illuminates Gardens by the Bay and the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. Gardens by the Bay is a modern, futuristic-looking greenhouse park complex in Marina Bay, Singapore, which opened in the summer of 2012 and aims to improve the ecology of the city. The area of the complex is 101 hectares.

One greenhouse is called Flower Dome - its area reaches 1.2 hectares, and inside it maintains a warm subtropical climate similar to the Mediterranean. The Cloud Forest Dome is a slightly smaller greenhouse (0.8 hectares) with humid equatorial conditions. In total, 220 thousand plants from different parts of the planet grow in both greenhouses. In Gardens by the Bay, a special complex of structures has been created for tourists, consisting of 18 “trees” with a height of 25 to 50 m, the highest of which are connected by a 128-meter bridge. Moreover, 11 of these trees are equipped with solar panels, which allows the complex to save energy.

In January 2014, a separate area designed for recreation with children, the Far East Organization Children’s Garden, opened in the park. The new park allows children to explore, imagine and create while surrounded by lush vegetation, which in turn encourages them to develop an interest in nature and the environment.

The new 1-acre park is located between the Cloud Forest and Satay by the Bay areas and provides opportunities for recreation and entertainment for the whole family. Children's attractions and programs are designed for two age groups: from 1 to 5 years and from 6 to 12 years. Children can play interactive games, including water games, using integrated equipment; educational programs are also provided. Key themes for entertainment are water adventures and forest adventures. Such active and sensory play, according to experts, contributes to the physical, cognitive and social-emotional development of children.

The park's play area includes a suspension bridge, a hammock, a swing, a balancing bar, a slide with a springboard, and equipment for trimming trees; a water attraction with 17 fish figures, from which jets of water shoot out and on which children can climb; a system of water tunnels and fountains rotating 360 degrees; a real tropical forest with four- and seven-meter trees and rope bridges; an adventure trail with a climbing rock and much more. Since the park is part of a botanical garden, it is rich in exotic plants.

On the territory of the gardens there is the famous sculpture “Planet” - in the form of a baby. The author is British artist and sculptor Mark Quinn.

Supertrees

Supertrees (that’s what the project developers called them) are huge structures made of concrete and iron that imitate huge futuristic trees. The tree trunk actually looks like a real tree in a tropical forest thanks to the large number of plants planted directly on it. The supertrees contain about 200 species of plants such as ferns, orchids and other tropical flowers. Moreover, each supertree contains about 163 thousand different plants.

There are 18 supertrees in the park. They have different heights, the highest 50 meters, the smallest 25 meters. At the same time, the largest supertrees are connected by a bridge, which was created for walks by park visitors. From its height you can view the entire Gardens by the Bay park and admire not only its lush vegetation, but also its amazing structures. The bridge is 128 meters long and raised to a height of 22 meters.

Those who say that supertrees are useless and are just a huge waste of money will be wrong. Supertrees have their own important functions, 11 of them are equipped with photovoltaic systems and are able to convert sunlight during daylight hours into energy that will be spent on lighting in the evening. It should be noted that the supertrees are illuminated very beautifully. Every day at 20.45 a light show begins, during which the supertrees are illuminated so favorably to the music that it seems that they are dancing.

In addition, supertrees can collect rainwater, which is then used to water plants. Also on their tops there are various establishments, from shops to cafes. You can climb to the top of the supertree using an elevator built into the frame. However, you have to pay extra for the elevator ride. But from this height there are truly stunning views.

Supertrees deserve to be on travelers' list of must-see attractions in Singapore. Moreover, it is advisable to look at these futuristic objects twice, during the day and in the evening during the light show. If it is not possible to come to the park several times, then it is better to come in the evening and enjoy the evening views. They say they are the most impressive. But in general, not only the supertrees, but the entire park is amazing. However, it will take a lot of time to explore all corners of Gardens by the Bay. Their total area is 54 hectares. But if you have time, it’s worth doing, because it’s not in vain that more than a billion dollars were spent on the development of this park; you will definitely see something that will impress you.

How to get there

Gardens by the Bay is located opposite the famous Marina Bay Hotel. The nearest metro station is Bayfront MRT Station (CE1). You can also get to the park by bus number 400 from Marina Bay MRT station (NS27/CE2).

On the shores of Marina Bay in the central area of Singapore there is an amazing tropical park called Gardens by the Bay. It is a huge park area covering 101 hectares of reclaimed land. The park consists of three gardens: East, South and Central, which are dedicated to the flora of Africa, South America and Asia.

Gardens by the Bay is an integral part of the Singapore government's strategy to transform Singapore from a "Garden City" to a "City in a Garden" to improve quality of life through greening. The idea of creating such a large-scale project was publicly announced back in 2005, and the official opening of the unique futuristic gardens took place in June 2012.

The concept and design of the tropical park was developed by a team of British designers from various companies: Land Design Studio, Atelier Ten, Thomas Matthews, Atelier One, Grant Associates, Wilkinson Eyre.

The Gardens by the Bay complex boasts 225 thousand plants from different continents, water gardens, greenhouses, swimming pools, waterfalls, as well as an unusual alley consisting of 18 gigantic Supertrees Grove trees.

At night, unusual structures turn into a forest glowing with multi-colored lights. The height of the huge tree-like structures ranges from 25 to 50 meters. They provide shelter for unique tropical plants, including exotic ferns, orchids and rare species of vines. In addition, structures made of concrete and iron rods imitate the life processes of trees - they use solar energy for some important functions. What allows these fantastic plants to shine at night are the energy-storing photovoltaic panels installed on some of them. Other trees are used to air condition greenhouses and collect rainwater for fountains and irrigation. Metal giants entwined with tropical plants are connected by overhead passages, from which it is very convenient to enjoy the surrounding landscapes. You can climb to the observation deck, located under the crowns of two large super-trees, along the OCBC Skyway walking trail, which is at an altitude of 22 meters, and visitors can relax and refresh themselves in the Supertree-top cafe, which lies at a 50-meter height. At night, the quaint Supertrees Grove comes alive with the OCBC Garden Rapsody light and music show.

The Gardens by the Bay park complex consists of two greenhouses - the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest, which are located on the edge of the Marina Bay coastline.

The first of them, the Flower Dome, is larger than its neighbor and has an area of 1.2 hectares; it has the status of the largest frameless greenhouse in the world. It is home to flora from the Mediterranean and other semi-arid tropical regions with a mild, dry climate. The greenhouse includes 7 themed gardens (South America, South Africa, Australia, California, Mediterranean, Baobabs, Succulents), an olive grove, a cafe and multimedia screens. The height of the Flower Dome is 38 meters, and the average temperature maintained in the room is 23-25°C.

The greenhouse, called "Cloud Forest", with an area of 0.8 hectares, creates conditions for a humid equatorial climate, characteristic of tropical mountain regions at an altitude of 1000-3000 meters. It features a 35-metre waterfall, a 42-metre mountain covered in lush exotic vegetation, and a spiraling aerial trail.

Tropical Gardens by the Bay also features the Heritage Gardens, which celebrate the history of the Singaporean people, the World of Plants, which displays numerous species of flora, and the Kingfisher and Dragonfly Lakes, which offer walking trails.

In 2014, the complex was replenished with a “Children's Garden” with water activities and a playground, an obstacle course, tree houses and an amphitheater hidden from the sun and rain.

Visiting hours for the open-air gardens are from 5 am to 2 am. Entrance to the greenhouses is available every day from 9 to 21. Ticket prices are $28 for adults and $15 for children aged 3 to 12 years. A walk along the OCBC Skyway trail suspended between gigantic trees will cost $5 for adults and $3 for children. You can purchase tickets online on the official website of the park.

The best time to visit Gardens by the Bay is in the late evening, when you have the opportunity to enjoy the richness of the greenhouses and at the same time admire the night light show.

You can get to the tropical Gardens by the Bay complex on a direct flight with Singapore Airlines, which flies between Moscow and Singapore. The flight will take approximately 10.5 hours. European and Asian airlines also offer suitable flights, but with connections in other countries.

At the end of June 2012, a unique complex with futuristic coastal gardens - Gardens by the Bay - opened in Singapore near Marina Bay. On 101 hectares there are two greenhouses with 220 thousand plants from all continents, as well as giant steel super-trees from 25 to 50 meters high. Coastal Gardens Gardens by the Bay is part of the government's strategy to transform Singapore into a garden city. The Singapore authorities announced the coastal gardens Gardens by the Bay back in 2005. The gardens were supposed to improve the environmental situation of the city. In 2006, an international competition was announced to develop an architectural plan. 170 companies from 24 countries took part in it.
The park consists of 3 parts, called Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central.
Bay South opened on June 29, 2012. This is the largest part of the coastal gardens of Gardens by the Bay (54 hectares), being, in fact, the main part of the entire park complex.
The main attractions and hallmark of the coastal gardens of Gardens by the Bay are the Cloud Forest, Flower Dome greenhouses and a grove of 18 giant Supertrees, each of which is a vertical park. Greenhouses Cloud Forest (left) and Flower Dome (right):
The Flower Dome is protected from Singapore's equatorial sun by 3,300 glass panels and covers an area of 1.2 hectares.
The greenhouse with plants maintains the climate of the subtropical regions of the Mediterranean. The second greenhouse is a tropical Cloud Forest with an area of 0.8 hectares, located under a glass dome:
Here, the conditions of a humid equatorial mountain climate are simulated at altitudes of 1000 and 3500 meters above sea level.
In the center of the greenhouse there is a beautiful 35-meter waterfall, which allows you to maintain the humidity necessary for tropical plants and create different temperature zones. So, at an altitude of 60 meters the temperature difference with the lower tier is 5 degrees:

Super trees

The main attraction of the riverside gardens at Signapore are the 18 futuristic giant Supertrees ranging from 25 to 50 meters in height.

Super trees are made from a concrete base and a steel trunk and crown, which are special panels for planting. The steel panels are filled with 163 thousand plants of more than 200 species from around the world.
Thus, giant super-trees are vertical gardens in which you can see tropical creepers, orchids, rare ferns and much more. And incredibly beautifully illuminated:
Two of the super trees are connected by 128 meter long bridges located at a height of 22 meters. From here you have an amazing view of the “grove”:

At the top of the tallest super tree is a fast food restaurant.
Eleven of the 18 super trees have special solar panels that store energy throughout the day. In the evening it is used to create beautiful lighting and illumination. On the right are super trees from the coastal gardens of Gardens by the Bay, on the left is the Marina Bay Sands hotel with a rooftop pool:
The cost of creating the first phase of futuristic coastal gardens Gardens by the Bay was about $800 million.

The garden is adjacent to another landmark of Singapore - the Marina Bay Sands hotel with a swimming pool on the edge of the abyss (pictured on the right). Read more about it in the article.
