Permitted dimensions, size and weight of hand luggage on an airplane

The size and weight of carry-on baggage allowed on an airplane usually depends on the airline and the selected class of travel on the airplane. In Russia, on November 5, 2017, each passenger will be able to bring hand luggage weighing at least 5 kg into the aircraft cabin. This limit may be increased by the carrier.

You can take 5 kg on board the plane when purchasing air tickets at any of the fares:

  • Non-refundable and baggage-free;
  • Non-refundable, but with luggage included;
  • Return with luggage.

Typically, for holders of business and first class airline tickets, the permitted standards are higher than for economy class.

You can always check whether your hand luggage is the right size at the check-in counters at the airport in a specially designated area.

Due to repeated attempts by terrorists to carry individual components of explosive devices on board aircraft, since 2006 there have been serious bans on the carriage of liquids in hand luggage.

The following liquids fall into the discharge:

  • cosmetics and toiletries (perfumes, shampoos, gels, lotions, sprays, oils, paints, creams, deodorants, shaving foams, mascara, lipstick and toothpaste)
  • food products (drinks, canned food, caviar, syrups, soups, cheeses, jams, homemade preparations, etc.).

You will need to put all liquids in one transparent resealable bag no larger than 20x20 cm. You are allowed to take only one such bag on board the plane. Everything else that does not fit in this bag will simply have to be thrown away.

Baby food, dietary products and medications (with a prescription or doctor's note) that may be needed during the flight do not need to be placed in a plastic bag. By the way, don't be surprised if security staff may ask you to open the baby food and try it.

The volume of liquids that are allowed to be carried on board the aircraft

The total volume of liquids in the bag, together with the packaging in which they are located, should not exceed 1 liter, and the volume of each individual liquid (also taking into account the packaging) should be within 100 ml.

For example, you have a 110 ml bottle of perfume. And no matter how many spirits are left in it, these spirits will still not be allowed on board the plane.

To transport perfume in hand luggage, you can buy special train bottles not exceeding 100 ml.

Carrying food in hand luggage

Most airlines allow you to take food on board.

But it should be remembered that in the European Union there is a regulation that prohibits the import of dairy and meat products.

What products can you take on board the plane?

  • sandwiches
  • fruits, dried fruits, nuts
  • chocolate or candy
  • granola bars
  • baked goods, cookies, bread sticks, dryers, gingerbread
  • salad in a container

Liquid products prohibited for transportation include:

  • jam
  • yoghurts
  • oil
  • pate
  • sour cream
  • sauces
  • cottage cheese

Carry-on luggage for children

If you are traveling with a small child under two years of age without a separate seat, you will most likely be allocated an additional piece of carry-on baggage that is a standard size but slightly lighter in weight.

You can also replace your (non-child) piece of hand luggage with a stroller or carrycot (if it folds and can fit in the compartment above the seats).

Packing and preparing for the flight involves packing the tourist’s things. At the same time, it is important to decide which items will have to be carried in the luggage compartment, and what will be able to be carried on board. Here, the traveler takes into account the maximum permissible weight for each piece of luggage and excludes objects prohibited for transportation from the planned list. For beginners who are not familiar with these rules, let us clarify what is prohibited from taking on board the ship.

Airline employees define suitcases that weigh up to 23 kg as luggage. Moreover, the total size of the sides of such bags does not exceed 2,030 mm. For any excess, you will have to pay an additional fee according to the current airline tariffs. However, most low-cost airlines and some fare packages of major carriers exclude free luggage space. Therefore, let’s take a closer look at the question of what can be carried in hand luggage on an airplane.

This category of luggage is regulated by a separate section of the carrier’s regulations. Here the maximum dimensions of the bag are 55X40X20 with an aspect ratio of length: width: height. The total measurement indicator is limited to 1 meter 15 centimeters. In addition, airlines impose weight restrictions on such luggage. Large domestic carriers like " Aeroflot" And " S7“Packages with a weight of 10 kg are allowed on board, and foreign airlines – up to 15. The average maximum weight for other airlines ranges from 6–8 kilograms.

The appearance of the packaging does not matter for the air carrier. However, it is advisable for passengers to take into account that the airport staff will add the mobile rollers of the suitcase to the overall dimensions. Experienced tourists recommend taking backpacks on board - due to the side straps, such a bag can be slightly reduced in size. In addition, this item is practical and easy to transport.

Considering that airlines allocate only one place for luggage in the cabin of the airliner for economy class passengers, it is appropriate for the traveler to take a responsible approach to packing their suitcase. After all, pre-flight inspection involves a strict inspection of the contents of the bag. If prohibited items are detected, the passenger will have to check the item as luggage or refuse to travel - after all, in such situations, the carrier has the right to refuse the flight. Therefore, let us clarify what you cannot take in hand luggage on the plane. New airline regulations today have expanded the list of such items.

Illegal items

The answer to the question of what cannot be carried in hand luggage will be an extensive list of items. When packing, keep in mind that in advance you will have to abandon the idea of carrying poisonous, radioactive or chemical compounds and substances that are easily flammable on the plane. The carriage of explosive solid and liquid objects and oxidizing substances is strictly prohibited. In addition, sharp objects, bladed weapons, firearms or their imitations will not be allowed into the salon. This list even includes toys that resemble the appearance of a knife or machine gun.

Airline employees will not allow these categories of items on board the aircraft or in the luggage compartment. The exception in such situations are piercing objects and weapons. It is permissible to carry such items in luggage if the airline employees present the necessary permits and permits. Moreover, you will have to inform about such objects long before the flight takes off.

Let us clarify in more detail what you cannot take on a plane in your hand luggage, because the general definition is not very informative and often misleads beginners. Therefore, we will consider the nuances of the issues of transporting piercing and cutting objects. This category includes trivial household items - a corkscrew, manicure accessories, medical equipment. Security staff will not allow knitting needles, hooks or straight razors to be carried in the cabin.

Although there are some exceptions here too. Nail files made of polymers with rounded edges or a razor with a block of replaceable hidden blades will not fall under the described restrictions. However, it is advisable to remember that all flights, especially flights that are subject to a high level of danger, are checked very carefully by airport employees. Therefore, do not be lazy to check in advance on the website or at the airline office what you cannot take on board the plane. Such actions will save time and money - after all, when an illegal object is detected, the passenger is forced to transfer it to his luggage or leave it at the airport. Refusal to comply with the requirements of the security officer may result in the client being barred from boarding the flight.

Innovations in transportation standards

Recently, the rules for transporting items on airliners were updated to include several categories of items that are illegal in flight. We have already listed these groups in general terms, now we will look at what things are at risk of being included in the list of prohibited items. Let's start with volatile flammable substances. The list includes C2H5 compounds, gasoline, paints and varnishes, and printer cartridges. The security service includes solvents, some alcohol-containing personal hygiene products, infusions and essential oils in this category.

The group of explosive objects includes all physical states of substances. Nitrate, nitroglycol and nitroglycerin compounds, and hexogen will not be allowed on the plane. Among the isotopic substances there is some medical equipment for diagnostics. Give up the idea of transporting such things if the composition contains radioactive chemical elements.

In addition, mixtures that support the combustion of other substances are now illegal. This list includes hydroperoxide (hydrogen peroxide), fertilizers containing ammonium nitrate and nitrite, bleaches and detergents, and stain removers.

Toxic compounds are also included in the group of items prohibited for transportation by air. Here are all the drugs that provoke poisoning of the body, penetrating through the skin and respiratory organs. The list includes chlorine, formaldehyde, household chemicals, air fresheners, and mercury. In addition, it is advisable for the passenger to consider refusing to transport bacteriologically hazardous substances.

A step towards clients

Given the wide range of prohibited items, many of which include trivial household objects, carriers have added exceptions to the lists of illegal substances. Today, an airline client will be able to take food vinegar on the road, provided it is packaged in accordance with the norms for the transportation of liquids. But the volume of this substance is halved and is 500 ml. In addition, it is permissible to transport alcohol with an alcohol content of no more than 70%. Here, transportation standards correspond to the requirements for packaging liquid substances.

Clients will bring nail polish, facial cleansing aerosol up to half a liter in volume, and lighters. In addition, airlines allow you to take on board one mercury thermometer or another thermometer of the passenger's choice. However, such nuances will have to be clarified with the specific carrier. After all, airlines have different security policies and the lists of such items differ even among domestic airlines.

Restrictions for transporting things

In addition to the list of prohibited items, airlines practice setting restrictions on the transportation of luggage. This group included liquids and medications. Let's figure out whether it is possible to take water and the necessary medications on the plane. As for medical supplies, passengers here only carry permitted items. If the medicine is classified as an illegal substance on board, the airline client provides the security staff with a document certified by a doctor’s seal about the vital need to carry a specific medicine.

A separate code of practice has been developed for the transport of liquid and pasty products. Passengers take water or juice on board the ship within strictly limited limits. The requirements regulate the carriage of up to a liter of liquid by one person. Moreover, this volume will have to be packaged in several containers, the capacity of which is 100 ml. Similar rules apply to transporting jelly-like substances.

Airline customers legally transport drinking water, alcohol from Duty Free, soft drinks, medicinal and decorative cosmetics, which are not included in the list of items prohibited for transportation. Moreover, the carrier company’s employees monitor the passenger’s compliance with transportation rules. What is important here is the nominal capacity of the container, which does not exceed the permissible values.

Baby food is considered a separate category here - after all, airlines classified such products as liquids. Packaging standards are the same here, but the total volume increases if the child needs more food during the flight. However, such rules only apply when flying with a baby. The absence of a child on board or traveling with a child over two years old cancels the described privileges.

For flights with infants under two years of age, the carrier is removing restrictions on the carriage of baby food.

When asked why liquids cannot be brought onto the plane, carriers say that there are known cases when passengers brought explosive substances onto the plane under the guise of drinks. Therefore, for safety reasons, airlines minimize the likelihood of an accidental or intentional explosion on board during a flight. Similar demands emerged after a series of terrorist attacks in the air.

Check procedure

Checking in for a flight requires the passenger to undergo customs inspection and security control. The contents of bags are subject to careful examination at the airport. When prohibited objects are identified, the airport employee draws up a report of the find and confiscates the illegal item from the client. If the item is available for free sale, the product is left at the airport until the passenger returns.

Restrictions on the transportation of liquids and a ban on certain categories of substances help increase the safety of passengers during flights

If illegally transported weapons or components are detected in luggage, the security officer documents the find and contacts law enforcement. Such situations are fraught with removal from the route for the client and threaten liability before the law. Therefore, follow the rules and do not try to outwit experienced airport employees.

As you can see, by adhering to airline rules, the traveler will not experience problems when checking in luggage. To minimize the likelihood of unpleasant situations, it is appropriate to familiarize yourself with the carrier’s requirements in advance and clarify the points that interest you.

Hand luggage is the luggage you take on board the plane. Each economy class passenger is entitled to one piece of hand luggage, while business and first class passengers are entitled to two pieces each.

One piece of carry-on luggage is not the same as one bag. There may be several of them. The main thing is that all baggage that you carry on the plane complies with the weight and dimensions standards established by the airline.

What can you take in hand luggage and where to place it?

Bags, backpacks and packages that are considered carry-on luggage must be placed on the shelf above the passenger seat. You cannot leave things in the cabin aisle or at the emergency exit. If you have something heavy or valuable in your bag - for example, a video camera, a laptop - you can put them under the front seat.

Current rules for carrying hand luggage

  1. Minimum free weight Carry-on luggage is the same for all airlines - 5 kg. This means that you can carry a bag weighing 5 kg into the cabin of any airline, even the most budget low-cost ones, for free. Airlines set the maximum weight of hand luggage independently, but it cannot be less than the established norm.
  2. Cell phones, laptops, cameras and other gadgets are considered part of hand luggage. They need to be put in a bag or backpack and weighed all together. For everything that exceeds the established norm, you will have to pay extra. Now there are no exceptions for gadgets - you can try to put them in your pockets, but it may not work.
  3. Additionally In the aircraft cabin you can take in excess of the norm: a handbag, a briefcase, a backpack, baby food, a stroller, and outerwear. You can also bring canes, crutches, walkers, and folding wheelchairs if they fit under a chair or on a shelf. If they don't fit, you'll have to check them in as luggage. Medicines and Duty Free packages are not included in the carry-on baggage allowance.
  4. Hand luggage can be weighed at the check-in counter, as well as when boarding the flight. Some airports have frames to control the size of things. If the luggage fits through the frame, it can be taken on the plane; if not, it can be checked in as luggage.
  5. Liquids must be transported in containers no more than 100 ml, packed in a transparent bag 20x20 cm with a zipper. Liquids include cosmetics, food, and toiletries. The total volume of liquids should not exceed 1 liter. You can only carry one such bag per person on the plane.
  6. Can be carried in hand luggage food products that are permitted by sanitary standards. Remember that processed cheeses, caviar, and yogurt are considered liquids, so their volume cannot be more than 100 ml.
  7. Not allowed in the salon transport small-sized vehicles powered by lithium batteries - electric scooters, unicycles, Segways, hoverboards and hoverboards and others.

Carry-on baggage allowances for airlines that are more often booked by tour operators

We compared how many things you can carry into the cabin on different airlines. Most often, budget low-cost airlines have the strictest size restrictions. The table shows the most popular companies that most often organize flights in package tours.

New rules, adopted in 2017, forced Russian airlines to establish a free hand luggage allowance. Most of them settled on the minimum level of 5 kg per person. Check the transportation rules and weigh your hand luggage before departure so as not to overpay for every extra kilogram.

What not to take on a plane

All items and things listed above have the right to be prohibited from being transported airport administration in the aircraft cabin. For example, in such a list, which is contained on the Aeroflot website, there are quite simple, common everyday items that we use in everyday life, but their transportation in the aircraft cabin may be prohibited by the administration of the airport, airline and operator:

  • corkscrews
  • hypodermic needles (unless medically warranted)
  • knitting needles
  • scissors with blade length less than 60 mm

To avoid problems with check-in and boarding for your flight, it is better to discard these items on the road and do not take them with you into the aircraft cabin, including in your hand luggage.

Security screening at the airport

Screening at the airport is precisely the procedure during which airline employees can exclude items and items prohibited for transportation from luggage and hand luggage. The inspection procedure is set out in a special annex to the rules for pre-flight and post-flight inspections.

To ensure that passengers on board the aircraft feel safe, Aeroflot employees search passengers and baggage during check-in at the airport.

If requested by an Aeroflot employee, your baggage can be searched at check-in and/or at the boarding gate. A passenger who is presented with such a requirement is required to present hand luggage (1 piece) and some things that will be transported in the aircraft cabin (backpack, baby cradle, baby stroller) for weighing and inspection.

Hand luggage that exceeds the established standards (weight, size, quantity) for free carriage must be checked into the luggage compartment of the aircraft with an appropriate surcharge. Dangerous items and items prohibited for transportation will have to be left at the airport.
