What not to take on a plane. Personal belongings and hand luggage - what's the difference Products prohibited from being carried on an airplane as hand luggage

How much luggage can you take on a plane? Is it possible to carry alcohol, perfume, aerosols, medicines, cigarettes in luggage? What about food? Let's consider these questions in detail.

There are no international rules for baggage transportation; each air carrier regulates this issue independently. The airline can choose to transport baggage by piece or by weight.

Allowable baggage weight per person on an airplane

The weighing system allows you to transport free of charge:

  • in economy class no more than 20 kilograms of luggage with its total linear size of 203 centimeters;
  • in business class, with the same dimensions, you are allowed to take 30 kilograms with you.

If your baggage does not meet the established standards in at least one parameter, the air carrier has the right to demand additional payment. Under this system, children under ten years of age have the right to transport ten kilograms of things, and from the age of twelve they are already entitled to the adult norm for transporting cargo.

The weight system is convenient because when traveling together, the weight of all things is summed up, and the number of bags is not counted.

The place system is replacing the weigh system, despite its obvious convenience. Aeroflot recently switched to it. Here the transportation rules are as follows:

  • Economy class allows you to occupy only one piece of luggage with a bag not heavier than 23 kilograms;
  • in business class the conditions are softer: two pieces of luggage weighing no more than 32 kilograms each.

The main difference between the baggage system is that the weight of the baggage is not cumulative. For example, on a flight for two in economy class, passengers carry two items weighing 15 and 25 kilograms. The extra two kilos will be counted as a third piece of baggage and will be paid in full. When planning your luggage before traveling, keep in mind that such overload is paid at a high rate, comparable to the price of a ticket. Therefore, you should carefully calculate the weight of things.

The requirements for the maximum allowable size of baggage in the local system are even stricter: the total linear size of the item is no more than 158 centimeters.

Rules for transporting food, alcohol and cigarettes on an airplane

Alcohol is not on the list of goods prohibited from being carried on an airplane, but there are still certain rules for it. Thus, every adult passenger has the right to carry one liter of alcoholic beverages in hand luggage, regardless of their strength. The entire quantity is divided into several containers of no more than 100 milliliters each. All bottles are packaged in a plastic bag with a zipper. It is prohibited to use them on board: the packaging must not be broken until the end of the flight. Breaking the rules can cause trouble.

Carrying alcohol in luggage is regulated by the following rules:

  • liquids no stronger than 24% are carried without restrictions, but within the general weight restrictions;
  • alcohol with a strength of 24 to 70%, no more than five liters per passenger;
  • Alcohol over 70% alcohol is prohibited for transportation.

Alcoholic drinks purchased before the flight in duty-free stores are allowed to be transported in hand luggage, but in an intact package with a saved receipt. In low-cost airline companies, you will most likely have to pay for transporting a package of alcohol from a duty-free store.

In different countries, the rules for transporting strong drinks can vary greatly, so before an international flight, inquire about this issue separately.

The same recommendations apply to the question of the rules for transporting cigarettes. However, each country sets its own standards, which you should follow before flying. For example, when flying within the Russian Federation, only one cigarette pack (10 packs of 20 cigarettes), up to 250 grams of tobacco or no more than 50 cigars can be carried in hand luggage. In this case, the passenger must be 18 years old. Other countries have different age restrictions. For example, in Egypt, a 15-year-old passenger can easily carry tobacco products with him, but only those who are already 20 years old can fly to Japan with cigarettes.

As for medicines, it is allowed to carry drugs in solid form (capsules, powders, tablets) in hand luggage. Liquid medications, as well as ointments, creams and gels, must be in original containers of up to 100 ml, and then packaged in a bag (necessarily transparent) measuring 20x20 centimeters.

When transporting prescription drugs or drugs containing psychotropic/narcotic substances, you will need to present a doctor's prescription, and for an international flight you will also need to declare such drugs. An exception is made for passengers with insulin-dependent diabetes: insulin bottles, syringes and glucometers are allowed to be carried in hand luggage.

By the way, for international flights there is a list of drugs prohibited for transportation, and you should familiarize yourself with it before departure. For example, when flying to the USA, you will not be able to take the Corvalol, which is familiar in Russia, on board.

On domestic flights, you can take solid food into the cabin if it fits in your hand luggage and does not exceed the weight. On international routes, follow the rules of the countries you are traveling to. They usually prohibit the transportation of eggs, fish, meat and dairy products. The ban is due to the fact that these products are perishable and can cause an infectious disease and even an epidemic.

The transportation of liquid products is regulated separately. These include, in addition to water and juices, canned food, jam, jelly, honey, sour cream, cottage cheese, and sauces.

Most air carriers regulate the carriage of liquids and limit them to one liter per passenger, poured into hermetically sealed bottles with a capacity of no more than one hundred milliliters. All other liquids, including cosmetics, deodorants, colognes, perfumes, mosquito sprays and shampoos, are checked in as baggage according to the new rules.

What is prohibited from being carried on a plane in luggage in 2020?

There are dangerous items that are prohibited from being carried both in hand luggage and in the luggage compartment. These include:

  • weapons: cold steel, firearms, gas, stun guns;
  • explosives: dynamite, cartridges, pyrotechnics;
  • gases: liquefied, compressed in cylinders, aerosols;
  • flammable liquids: petroleum products, acetone, solvents;
  • solid flammable substances: matches, metal potassium, calcium, sodium;
  • poisonous and toxic: nicotine, arsenic, mercury;
  • caustic and causing rapid corrosion: salts, acids, lime.

This list also includes magnetized and radioactive substances.

The list of prohibited substances and items under the new rules is extensive. If you are planning to bring an unusual item on the plane, read this list in advance or consult with an airline representative. Compliance with these simple rules guarantees the safety of all passengers and the absence of problems during baggage inspection.

What to do if prohibited items are found in your luggage or baggage

Passengers often carry “prohibited” goods, not doing so intentionally, but simply without thoroughly knowing the flight rules. If airport security staff found prohibited items in your hand luggage or checked baggage, but you don’t want to lose them, the situation should be resolved in the following ways.

  1. If prohibited items are found before check-in: give them to mourners, put them in a storage room, or send them by mail (there is a branch at every airport) to the right place.
  2. If prohibited items are found after the check-in procedure, the airline staff will offer a couple of options to resolve the misunderstanding: complete confiscation of the “prohibited” items or temporary seizure with the opportunity to pick up the items after return. Make sure that a document is drawn up for items that are valuable to you, but are prohibited from being carried, according to which you can get them back.

In any case, try to prove to the security service that this item is dear to you - there is always a chance that the Security Service officers will meet you halfway.

For those who are not aware of the tragedy of a universal scale, or simply do not fly on airplanes, a brief excursion into history:

On February 15, 2018, Aeroflot airline suddenly tightened the rules for free transportation hand luggage, reducing its permissible dimensions.

Some readers won’t even understand why there’s such a panic: just think, just a few centimeters were removed. But in fact, thousands of travelers around the world find themselves in an unpleasant situation.

What are these new rules that everyone is discussing?

According to new Aeroflot rules, the height of hand luggage has decreased from 25 to 20 cm, and also reduced the number of items that could be carried in hand if they do not fit in hand luggage.

What can you bring? on an Aeroflot plane in your hands, in addition to hand luggage:

  • briefcase
  • handbag
  • bouquet of flowers
  • outerwear
  • suit in a suitcase
  • baby food for the child during the flight
  • crutches, canes, walkers, rollators, folding wheelchair
  • medications in the amount required for the duration of the flight
  • additional backpack weighing up to 5 kg and dimensions no more than 80 cm
  • folding baby stroller weighing no more than 7 kg and dimensions no more than 42x50x20cm
  • goods purchased at Duty Free ( one sealed plastic bag, with dimensions no more than 115 cm)

What has become impossible to carry:

  • Photographic equipment, camera, lenses
  • Laptops

According to international standards, the size of one free piece of baggage (backpack, bag, briefcase or suitcase) that can be taken into the aircraft cabin is 55x40x25 cm with a total weight of up to 10 kg for economy class.

These dimensions allow you to neatly fill the luggage rack above three seats, at the rate of one passenger in a seat - one piece of luggage for hand luggage.

So almost all manufacturing companies produce bags and suitcases of exactly this size for flights in the aircraft cabin. And at Aeroflot, suddenly, in an instant, these dimensions became invalid. And into the cabin of the plane with a suitcase standard size it became impossible to pass.

Height limit of 20 cm ( and even less) is found among low-cost airlines - airlines that save on everything for the sake of a favorable price for their tickets.

But Aeroflot is far from a low-cost airline, and no one expected such meanness from the oldest national air carrier.

What to do if your carry-on baggage does not meet the requirements

At airports there are special “calibrators” - metal baskets in which you can put your luggage if you are not sure whether it is the right size for a flight in the aircraft cabin, and not in the luggage compartment.

So, Aeroflot employees meticulously force many passengers to check their backpacks and bags, right in front of the check-in counters for flights. If the suitcase does not fit into the calibrator, or sticks out from it, there are two options:

1. Check in as luggage. Yes, yes, all the delicate equipment that you want to carefully carry on a cozy shelf above your chair is offered to be handed over to the rude hands of airport workers. It's like playing roulette: you may get lucky with neat movers, or you may not ( more often - no).

2. Pay extra for oversized hand luggage. This option is preferable, although it can lead to slight confusion: prices vary from 5,000 rubles on flights within our country, to 150 dollars (or euros) on flights abroad, if the size of hand luggage exceeds 203 cm.

Any chance you can get through with my bag?

You can try to squeeze your bag into the calibrator if the bag or backpack is soft. This is exactly how I walked with my trusty backpack, which was unsightly bloated due to the sweater I had stored there for cold weather in Barcelona.

The Aeroflot employee thought my backpack was oversized, so they politely asked me to check it for proper size. The check was successful, the backpack fit into the iron container, and I was allowed onto the plane.

If your backpack doesn’t fit into the “calibrator”, you can take out some of your things and put them in a bag or soft backpack. I always carry a fabric backpack like this with me inside my main one - it takes up little space, and can come in handy at any moment away from home.

According to the rules, the passenger has the right to an additional backpack ( or package), which does not exceed 80 cm in total dimensions and weighs up to 5 kg.

This way, you can outsmart the system and not check your hand luggage into your luggage. The approaches to “calibrators” are not limited - you can combine things, check and combine again.

Is the difference of 5 centimeters insignificant? No matter how it is!

Most suitcase manufacturing companies have a special line in their model range “ Cabin luggage": these are suitcases, bags or backpacks that correspond to generally accepted dimensions for unhindered travel in the aircraft cabin.

Only Aeroflot has dimensions decreased by 5 centimeters in height. The result is angry posts on social networks, scandals, hysterics, wasted nerves and money, and ultimately a negative attitude towards the airline, including threats of boycott.

It’s good that Aeroflot came to their senses. Just the other day, the conditions for carrying hand luggage changed again on the official website: the company returned the generally accepted dimensions of 55x40x23-25 cm. However, without official statements.

But what should you do to avoid losing money right before your flight? You need to buy the right suitcase that will pass any “calibration” test without any problems and fit on the luggage rack.

And there are such suitcases. They cost the right amount of money, hold enough things and save the passenger’s nerves.

Choose which one you want. All is good.

With any suitcase from this selection, you can confidently go straight onto the plane, no one will say a word. Until some Aeroflot quietly changes established standards again, of course.

1. Embossed suitcase with an unusual lid

2. Aluminum and lightweight Xiaomi 90FUN

3. Durable and cheap WOVELOT suitcase

4. Stylish and spectacular Y-ROAD TRAVEL Business

5. Compact bag on wheels from Y-ROAD TRAVEL

6. Real Bat-suitcase from travel tale

Unlike on a train, where you can carry a lot, on an airplane the rules for luggage are much stricter. On almost every flight there will be one passenger who will be asked to leave something at the airport. The list of prohibited items may vary slightly depending on the airport and country, but in general it is universal.

It is prohibited to take in checked luggage or hand luggage

    Weapon. Carbines, rifles, pistols, etc.; bayonet-knives, stilettos, swords, daggers and more; gas and pneumatic weapons; stun guns.

    Gases. Liquefied or compressed in cylinders; household and technical gases; lighters, cans for recharging them; aerosols; refill cylinders.

    Explosives and objects.Dynamite, gunpowder, TNT, explosive liquids and the like; cartridges, caps, primers; pyrotechnics and signaling devices: smoke bombs, sparklers, flares, firecrackers.

    Flammable liquids.Esters, gasoline, kerosene, solvents, etc.

    Toxic and poisonous substances.Nicotine, brucine, arsenic, strychnine, mercury, antifreeze agents, pesticides and so on.

    Corrosive substances. Salts, peroxides, acids, limes, polyester resins and so on.

What’s interesting is that you can’t take not only real weapons, but also fake ones. So, they may not miss your child’s toy machine gun or some kind of pistol for a theatrical production.

You should also not take radioactive or magnetized substances. In general, it is prohibited to transport anything that could be dangerous to people.

Can be carried in baggage with restrictions

Some things can still be carried in luggage, but subject to certain conditions.

    Piercing and cutting objects- but only for household purposes. For example, a shaving machine, manicure scissors, a nail file.

    Alcohol-containing drinks- in original containers and no more than 5 liters per passenger. Keep this in mind when you want to bring homemade wine from Georgia.

    Aerosols - only for sports and household purposes. These could be deodorants or hair sprays.

Can be carried in hand luggage with restrictions

    Medical thermometer- take electronic ones, without mercury.

    Disposable lighter- no more than one per person.

    Non-hazardous gels and liquids- no more than 100 ml and packed in a plastic transparent bag with a volume of up to 1 liter. It is important to mention that they must also be in a container of no more than 100 ml. This means that you will not be able to carry 100 milliliters of leftover shampoo in a liter bottle.

Cannot be carried in hand luggage

In addition to the general list, additional rules have been established for hand luggage.

    Cutting and piercing objects: scissors, knitting needles, syringe needles, corkscrews and penknives.

    Small vehicles: electric scooters, segways, unicycles, hoverboards. This limitation is due to the fact that they have batteries inside, which can explode.

Set aside knitting and hoverboarding for your host country; you won’t be able to use them on the plane.

What do they do with items prohibited for transportation?

Usually, if a prohibited item is of no value to a person, airport staff throw it away. The most popular situation occurs when going through customs control - you just bought a bottle of juice, you haven’t even had time to open it yet, but the customs officers will ask you to throw it away. But some things can still be saved; there are several options for this.

If prohibited items are found at the reception desk.The easiest way is to give them to mourners or leave them in a storage room. If you need them at your destination, send them by mail.

If prohibited items are found in hand luggage after passport control.Most likely they will be confiscated; you can ask for a seizure report to be drawn up and left for storage at the airport, then return for them upon return. Of course, this option is not suitable if you are returning home; you will not return to another country for the sake of an item you left behind.

If prohibited items are found in luggage after check-in.The items will most likely be confiscated, and the passenger will be asked to check in again.

An exceptional case is when weapons and ammunition are discovered without a transportation permit. In this case, airport security removes the passenger from the flight and calls the police to investigate.

In conclusion, we would like to say that you should not try to carry prohibited items on board. There may be serious problems with airport security, as well as with representatives of the law. If you are found with a similar item, calmly explain where it came from and, if necessary, hand it over to the airport staff.

Today there is a whole list of things that cannot be taken into the cabin for safety reasons. Unfortunately, not all tourists know what you can't take on a plane t some items, as a result of which, already during inspection at the airport, they find themselves in an unpleasant situation in which they are forced to throw into the trash bin sometimes high-quality and expensive items, the carriage of which is prohibited in the aircraft cabin. The article below provides a list of items that are best initially transported not in hand luggage, but in luggage or even left at home.

Things you shouldn't take on a plane

★ Weapons. As, in general, it’s easy to guess, you can’t take weapons of any kind on the plane. Moreover, we are talking about both real weapons: pistols, rifles, light machine guns, edged weapons, and imitation weapons, including ordinary children’s toys (although I think a pink or bright green children’s “blaster” made of plastic will be missed :). This same category of things that cannot be taken on an airplane includes ammunition, explosives, gas cartridges, as well as other means of attack and defense that can be used to carry out criminal acts. It is also better not to take a lighter or matches into the aircraft cabin, as they will most likely have to be thrown away during the security check.

★ Piercing and cutting objects. Penknives and kitchen knives, regular and manicure scissors, straight razors, metal nail files, screwdrivers, blades and other sharp objects that may be assessed by airport security as potentially dangerous and will not be allowed on board the aircraft. And don’t expect too much that a samurai sword or machete bought as a souvenir and not yet sharpened will be allowed to be carried on board under the pretext that they do not pose a danger.

Most likely, these items will delight not you and your friends when you return home, but the children of security service workers or themselves (if your rich collection of the latter does not yet have such things). I managed to carry regular blades into the cabin of the plane (I accidentally left them in the pocket of a leather folder - I noticed only when returning home), as well as folding nail scissors (I took a deliberate risk, since I needed them on a long trip). True, this does not guarantee that during the next flight you or I will be able to repeat this, because there is always a human factor, and the equipment at airports is constantly being improved.

Liquids. The category of liquids includes drinks (including alcoholic drinks), gels, lotions, pastes, creams, shaving foams, etc. In reality, there are certain volumes of liquids that can be taken into the cabin of an airplane quite legally. This is described in detail in a separate article on the website. Also in the article at the link you can find out what exceptions exist for transporting liquids such as baby food and medicines on an airplane.

★ Dangerous substances. You cannot take aggressive chemicals, poisons, flammable substances, radioactive or toxic substances on the plane. Even if all of these substances are intended to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes upon arrival in the city or country of destination, their transportation in the aircraft cabin is very dangerous, so at best you will have to throw them away in a special trash bin. In the worst case, you will have to explain for a long time and repeatedly to the distrustful employees of the airport security service and other security services why you tried to bring all this on board. Do you need it?

★ Food. Not everyone knows that you can bring food on board an airplane, but again there are a number of restrictions that relate to the type of food, its packaging and volume. Detailed information on this topic is presented in the article, I advise you to read it in order to avoid troubles at the airport when going through security.

★ Animals and birds. With a few exceptions, which include some small living creatures, you cannot take animals and birds on a plane, even if you have a full set of documents about their health and safety for others. If you really need to take your animal with you, you will most likely have to put it in a special isolated compartment in the luggage compartment. You can read more about transporting animals on an airplane in the article.

★ Other items, prohibited for transportation at a particular airport or by the rules of carriage of a particular airline. Before going to the airport, I advise you to carefully search on the official website of the airport for information about what you cannot take on the plane specifically from them. It often happens that due to certain events in the city or country of departure, additional restrictions are introduced on the carriage of certain items. For example, a complete ban on the carriage of liquids on board due to events in the country or certain products due to the imposed quarantine.

I also advise you to familiarize yourself with the list of things that are prohibited from being carried in hand luggage by the internal rules of the airline you have chosen. This may concern not only the type of objects and their purpose, but also their weight and size. For example, one airline may allow some items of sports equipment or musical instruments to be carried in the cabin, while another may allow it only in the luggage compartment.

I think the few extra minutes you spend searching for the information you need will not be in vain, because in return you will gain confidence that some of your things that you value and do not want to lose are not on the list of things that cannot be taken into the cabin. And confidence and calm will, in turn, allow you to avoid unnecessary anxiety at the airport, which will make your holiday abroad more comfortable and memorable from the very beginning of the journey.

At the end of the article, I would like to remind you that if you find yourself in a situation in which you had to leave (read - throw away) your valuable item, which was discovered during an inspection and classified as prohibited, do not create scandals and hysterics (because of which you may even be sent to prison). a rather humiliating personal search with a forced “striptease”). Flight safety is not a personal whim of the workers conducting the inspection, but a high degree of guarantee of the protection of all flight passengers from terrorist attacks and armed criminals. Therefore, before each flight (especially if you do not have them very often), run your eyes through the list of things that cannot be taken on a plane and according to the list of items allowed for carriage in hand luggage. I wish you pleasant and safe flights!
