Chelyabinsk is a city on the border of the Urals and Siberia, on the eastern slope of the Ural Mountains. It is the seventh largest in terms of population and the fourteenth largest in terms of area in the country.

People who do not live in Chelyabinsk, unfortunately, know little about the air traffic of this city. The airport of this locality is not as well known, for example, as Sheremetyevo or Pulkovo, although you can find out a lot of interesting information about it.

Chelyabinsk Airport. general characteristics

Currently, there is only one airport in Chelyabinsk, but during the years of the Soviet Union there were several of them. Moreover, one has a status of local significance, and the second has international status.

The modern airport of Chelyabinsk, called Balandino, is one of the five best airports in Russia. There are quite a lot of prerequisites for such a high status.

Firstly, it has an improved runway, capable of accommodating aircraft of all possible sizes. Its width is sixty meters and its length is 3200 meters. Secondly, it fully complies with the first category of the ICAO standard.

The airport is located quite advantageously. Built not far (in the northeast) from the capital of the Southern Urals. It is named after the nearby village - Balandino.

Currently, the airport is divided into two transport hubs. One accepts domestic flights, and the second international

The first sector, serving domestic flights, is capable of handling up to three hundred people per hour.

The second sector, which oversees international flights, serves about one hundred and fifty people per hour.

The airport is capable of receiving about 1.5 million passengers per year. And every year this figure is growing rapidly.

History of the airport

The history of this transport hub began more than eighty years ago. The first plane to land here was called Yu-13. It had a route from Sverdlovsk to Magnitogorsk, but with a transfer in Chelyabinsk. This happened in 1930.

An air terminal called Chelyabinsk opened in 1938 at the Shagol airfield. In 1953, a new Balandino airport was opened on this site. An air terminal, a radio center, and an office building were built here. For a long time it accepted only domestic flights.

In 1974, Balandino Airport in Chelyabinsk had the opportunity to serve ships of various types, and in 1994 it became international.

In August 1999 she became the owner of a modern complex. A new international airfield was put into operation, and an updated artificial runway appeared.

In 2012, passenger traffic at Balandino Airport exceeded the million mark, the first time this happened since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The next year it grew by another hundred thousand people. And at that moment it was a historical maximum for this airport. It was similar only in the eighties of the last century.

Chelyabinsk International Airport is located 18 kilometers from the city and 2 kilometers west of the village of Balandino. It is noteworthy that until 2008 the airport bore the name of this particular locality. It is the second largest airport in terms of air traffic in the Ural Federal District (after Yekaterinburg Koltsovo Airport) and has federal significance.

From Chelyabinsk International Airport there are daily flights to almost all regions of the Russian Federation, as well as to many countries of the Far and Near Abroad.

History of Chelyabinsk Airport

The development of civil aviation in Chelyabinsk began in 1930. It was this year, on August 15, that a passenger flight was carried out on a U-13 type aircraft, which followed the route Sverdlovsk-Magnitogorsk via Chelyabinsk. The airport was created at a local military airfield in 1938.

The modern airport was built in the late autumn of 1953. An air terminal, office buildings and a radio center were created. Still, it had many restrictions regarding the reception of large aircraft. Thus, in 1962, a runway made of concrete was built and put into operation. This made it possible to accept large passenger airliners such as Tu-104 and Tu-154.

At the beginning of 1974, Chelyabinsk Airport began operation of a new air terminal complex.

Confirmation of the quality of the runway was the acceptance of the An-225 aircraft in 1990, which transported one of the largest T-800 tractors to the Yakutia region. As you know, the 90s were difficult for almost all organizations. As for the Chelyabinsk airport, in 1994 it became a privatized joint-stock company with the name Chelyabinsk Aviation Enterprise. In July of the same year, the company became open to receive both passenger and cargo aircraft.

In 1999, the airport's unique terminal complex was renovated. This year the station began operating to serve international flights. Repair work was carried out on the runway.

In the spring of 2007, most of the shares of Chelyabinsk airport, namely 68%, were bought by the EAAC company, which manages airports in Russia and the CIS. This complex was acquired for a general increase in capitalization.

2012 was quite successful for the airport, since it was this year that the passenger turnover indicators of the Soviet era were achieved. Just over one million people were transported this year, up from 1.1 million in 1989.

In 2013, the Chelyabinsk airport carried out active cooperation with AirBridgeCargo and Atlas Air, which carried out cargo transportation on Boeing 747 aircraft from Winnipeg and Chicago to Chelyabinsk. These international transport flights transported purebred pigs for the Ariant enterprise.

Chelyabinsk International Airport has two passenger terminal complexes:

    1) Serves passengers on domestic Russian routes;

    2) Serves passengers of international destinations.

Directly next to the airport terminal building there is a five-story Sfera hotel. There is also a Utes hotel nearby. But most hotels are located in Chelyabinsk itself.

You can get from Chelyabinsk International Airport to the city itself in the following ways:

  • 1) City bus.

Three bus routes lead from the airport to various parts of the city - No. 1, No. 41, No. 45.

  • 2) Minibus taxi.

Route No. 82 connects the airport, railway station and the central part of the city. The movement starts at 06.10, ends at 21.40. The bus runs every 8 minutes. The journey from start to finish takes 1 hour and 15 minutes.

  • 3) Aeroexpress.

A special express bus runs constantly. The fare is 75 rubles.

  • 4) Taxi.

You can use the services of taxi companies at the parking lot, which is located next to the airport complex.

At Chelyabinsk International Airport you can be offered the following types of services:

    Bars, restaurants and cafes;

Aviation accidents at Chelyabinsk airport

The first incident occurred on January 26, 2008. Due to a pilot error, an S7 Airlines plane, an Airbus A319, landed on a taxiway that was once used as a runway. As a result, the landing was successful, the car and passengers remained unharmed.

On May 28, 2008, Moscovia Airlines conducted its next flight from Chelyabinsk to Perm on an An-12 cargo plane. Shortly after takeoff, electrical problems were discovered. Because of this, the crew requested permission to turn around and land in Chelyabinsk. But heavy smoke in the cabin and a breakdown prevented us from returning to the airport. The car fell 11 kilometers from the runway, while there were 9 people on board; no one managed to survive.

Another aviation accident occurred with the Yak-42 aircraft of the Izhavia company. After takeoff, the control stabilizer failed, and there were no passengers on board. The crew switched to backup control and were able to make a safe emergency landing.

In the summer of 2013, an unknown person reported a bomb planted at the airport. A prompt evacuation of all passengers and personnel from the airport complex was carried out. As a result of the search, the explosive device was never found.

The most recent incident is the emergency landing of an An-12 aircraft in July 2015. The plane was flying to Moscow from Chkalovsk, but due to heavy hail, clouds and thunderstorms near the Chelyabinsk airport it was forced to land. The landing was carried out on two working engines on the ground parallel to the concrete runway. There were 5 crew members and 5 passengers on board; as a result of the landing, everyone survived. As for the car, the nose strut was broken, and the hail also severely damaged the control surfaces and engine.

Chelyabinsk International Airport schedule:

What to do if your flight is canceled

If a flight is canceled more than 24 hours before departure, passengers will be transferred to similar airline flights. The carrier bears the costs; the service is free for the passenger. If you are not satisfied with any of the options offered by the airline, most airlines can issue an “involuntary return.” Once confirmed by the airline, the money will be returned to your account. Sometimes this can take several weeks.

How to check in at the airport

Online check-in is available on most airline websites. Most often it opens 23 hours before the start of the flight. You can go through it no later than 1 hour before the plane departs.

To check in at the airport you will need:

    • identification document specified in the order,
    • birth certificate when flying with children,
    • printed itinerary receipt (optional).
  • What can you take on a plane?

Carry-on luggage is the items you will take with you into the cabin. The weight limit for hand luggage can vary from 5 to 10 kg, and its size most often should not exceed the sum of three dimensions (length, width and height) from 115 to 203 cm (depending on the airline). A handbag is not considered hand luggage and is carried freely.

The bag you take with you on the plane should not contain knives, scissors, medicines, aerosols, or cosmetics. Alcohol from duty free stores can only be transported in sealed bags.

How to pay for luggage at the airport

If the weight of luggage exceeds the standards established by the airline (most often 20-23 kg), you need to pay for each kilogram of excess. In addition, many Russian and foreign airlines, as well as low-cost airlines, have tariffs that do not include free baggage allowance and must be paid separately as an additional service.

In this case, luggage must be checked in at the airport at a separate Drop-off check-in counter. If you are unable to print your boarding pass, you can obtain one at the airline's regular check-in counter, and check-in and check-in your luggage there.

Where to find out the arrival time if you are a greeter

You can find out the plane's arrival time on the airport's online board. The Tutu.ru website has an online display of the main Russian and foreign airports.

You can find out the exit number (gate) on the arrivals board at the airport. This number is located next to the incoming flight information.
