What is worth seeing in Chernigov? Chernigov Chernigov is one of the most ancient cities in Ukraine.

A trip to Chernigov is an amazing opportunity to travel back in time. It is not for nothing that it is called the “city of legends”: the spirit of Kievan Rus and the ancient Chernigov principality still emanates here... Above the Desna you can still hear about the exploits of the times of the Hetmanate and the glorious Cossacks, as well as about the spiritual treasures of St. Anthony of Pechersk. It’s fortunate that we can still touch many of Chernigov’s ancient wonders with our own hands. Where to go first in Chernigov? Naturally, to the center!

Just one and a half to two hours by shuttle bus from the Kyiv metro station "Chernigovskaya" - and we are there. What to see in Chernigov? The list is rich. An ancient city, a glorious city...
These words of the well-known bard do not apply to Chernigov at all, but he would well deserve the lines from this song.
Because it is truly ancient and truly glorious.

This is one of the significant cities (one could even call it the second most important after Kyiv) of Kievan Rus, the northern neighbor of Kyiv, located at a very short distance from it. This is what makes it attractive for travel.
The distance from Kyiv to Chernigov is nothing - 140 km relatively flat road, covered with asphalt. This is two hours of leisurely driving and low gas costs.

Road to Chernigov.
More precisely, from Kyiv, since the camera took a view of the road from where we were driving.

If you wish, you can make a stop at Kozelce, which is located halfway between Chernigov and Kiev.
there in Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary you can see a unique, as experts say, iconostasis, which is worth seeing once. There is no need to deviate from the route; it is practically on the highway.

It's difficult to describe what makes it unique, but we were impressed.
Unlike those iconostases that can be seen in cathedrals and churches in Kyiv, there is a feeling of “naturalness” and antiquity without excessive gilding and pretentiousness.
Initially it was quite large, so it is now housed in three separate buildings.
Not all elements of this miracle have survived to this day, but they will tell you more accurately about it on the spot in Kozelets itself. Let's not take bread from the guides)))

The first thing that catches your eye is Catherine's Church and the inscription “Chernigov” on the slope.
Actually, we find ourselves in one of the old parts of the city, where an ancient defensive complex is located.
This is the place with twelve guns is the calling card of Chernigov. We will come back here again, but first we needed to settle in and settle into an apartment that we had booked in advance through the World Wide Web.

The kitchen of our apartment, rented for a day on Mira Avenue.

Our apartment is located on Prospekt Mira in the central part of the city. That's where we went. We parked the car in a parking lot not far from the five-story building where we will live for two days and one night.

Rest, coffee and tea, we scattered our things around the apartment and set off on foot to explore the ancient city.
You won’t be able to get around the entire city in two days, of course, and there’s no need to. We chose the most important thing that we can have time to watch and that will leave memories in our heads.

I was somewhat struck by the proximity of the private sector and five-story buildings almost in the city center. Moreover, private houses are not quite the same as what we are used to here. Maybe you can feel the closeness of Russia?

Detinets (Val) in Chernigov.

First, which is quite understandable, we went to the most ancient part of the city, which is already more than a thousand years old.
This is the so-called Detinets.
It’s like a fortified and self-sufficient city within a city. Not even a city, because back then it couldn’t be called that, but a settlement.

What is a fortification? This is a fortified settlement, surrounded by an earthen rampart, so that it would be difficult for enemies to fly in and cause any trouble.

Chernigovsky Detinets was surrounded by an earthen rampart with a wooden wall. Additional protection was provided by a deep ditch into which half-dead enemies thrown from the walls were supposed to fall.

There are several attractions on the territory of Detinets.
The most striking thing is the guns, which are lined up on the rampart, preparing to repel the attack.
There are twelve of them. Around the thirteenth hour they usually make an appointment with non-local comrades whom they do not want to meet. They then wander around and count from 1 to 12 with slight bewilderment in their eyes.

Not only can guns shoot, but they can also act as bulletin boards.

Autumn gives the picturesque brightness to our Chernigov excursion.

Once upon a time, a formidable weapon looks out from the Val in Chernigov.

The place itself is quite beautiful, the Desna river flows picturesquely nearby.
You can cross the bridge, which is a few minutes walk from the ancient settlement, to the other side. There is nothing on the other side, just trees, trees and trees. Nature, in short.

The bridge over the Desna has a corner for lovers who want to seal their love forever in this way. Now there are many more castles there. The picture shows 2009.

There is also a place on the bridge where newlyweds and lovers hang locks as a sign of love for many years.
You can just stand on the bridge and look along the river.
The place is calm, peaceful and conducive to all sorts of thoughts about life and time.
And Chernigov itself does not bother you with fuss. Quite a comfortable city.

On the banks of the Desna in the Detinets area you can see such land ships.

Colorful wooden houses are not uncommon in Chernigov.

From the tracks on the shore you can see the difference between the upper and lower water levels.
I cannot say what caused the level fluctuations. Don't know.

View from the bridge near Detinets to the Desna River.

Taras Shevchenko sits as if alive on a bench and thinks.

On the territory of Detinets there is monument to Shevchenko, still young.
He sits there on a bench that you can climb on and sit next to the great poet.
We were in the fall, in October - very beautiful. The yellow foliage against the blue sky adds extra beauty to the photos.
I think it’s beautiful there in the summer, but it’s different. We, like Pushkin, are for autumn.

Domes of the Transfiguration Cathedral.

Transfiguration Cathedral, also located on the territory of this ancient settlement, is quite interesting in itself. Historically. But it looks like an ordinary church, of which there are many both in Chernigov and in Ukraine.
It was practically not destroyed and was almost preserved in the form in which our ancestors saw it a thousand years ago. Small alterations don't count.
So, looking at the domes, shimmering with gold, you can mentally return to the 11th century and try to feel how our local residents lived then.

Catherine's Church, which is visible when entering the city from Kyiv.

Located nearby Boris and Gleb Cathedral. I can't say anything about him. But he is there.

On this historical patch there is still Catherine's Church.
She is no longer on the territory of Detinets itself, but it is she who greets guests from Kyiv first and it is she who we saw when we entered Chernigov.
Catherine's Church is younger than the neighboring churches, although older than all the neighboring buildings. Like 1715. Well, also a long time ago.
By the way, the most beautiful church, in my opinion. And it is in an open, visible place.

Plan diagram of Detinets

If you have the opportunity and desire, take a tour of Detinets. They will tell you a lot of interesting things, and you will be imbued with these historical facts much more than after simply visiting Val. Although, I repeat, just walking there is also pleasant and beautiful.

If you look down from the height of Val, you can see old, colorful wooden houses. Looking at them, you become even more imbued with the antiquity and special aura of this place.

Singing or musical fountain in Chernigov.

Having examined Detinets and enjoying the wonderful view of the Desna River and its deserted left bank, we decided to return to the more urbanized part of Chernigov.
After admiring the Catherine Church once again, we moved along the Alley of Heroes along Prospekt Mira, which runs through Chernigov from south to north, towards the center.

Red Square greeted us ahead, although according to our data we were quite far from Moscow. But this was not the same Red Square.. We will return to it later. In the evening.
Then we walked along Prospekt Mira, looking at the city and peering at the people.

The center welcomed a lot of Belarusians who arrived by buses and cars. We never found out why there was such interest in Chernigov on their part.
There is no doubt that the proximity of the border plays a decisive role. The border with Belarus is only about 70 km, and the nearest large city in the neighboring state is a hundred km away.

We didn’t see any special sights in the center of Chernigov, but we just walked around and went “home” for lunch. And by evening (it gets dark early in October) we returned to Red Square in Popudrenko Park, which is opposite the Chernigov Shevchenko Theater.
In Popudrenko Park there is a landmark of Chernigov - the Light and Musical (Singing or Musical) fountain.

The light and music fountain in Chernigov is transformed at night.

Let's say right away that it is not a match, which is the main attraction of this city, but since we saw such a miracle for the first time (and it was in 2009), we really liked it.

It was already dark and the fountain, which during the day was something trivial, although wedding processions were constantly photographed near it, was transformed at night and became very attractive.
The selection of classical music and the synchronized operation of the fountain, throwing out jets of water of varying lengths and strengths, still made an impression on us.
And judging by the people around us, whom we could see in the dark, everyone liked him. So we recommend it.

This completed the first day of our trip to Chernigov. After the fountain, we simply took another walk through the evening streets of the city on a weekend (it was Saturday) and went to bed in our temporary home.

Holy Trinity Cathedral in Chernigov.

The next morning, as soon as I woke up and remembered that we were in another city, we decided to have breakfast and drink a cup of aromatic coffee. Or two, I don’t even remember.
Then we slowly got ready and went by car to another iconic place in Chernigov - the Trinity Cathedral.

It is best to view any event, and even more so, the area from above. And this is exactly the place where there is such an opportunity.
From the bell tower of the cathedral you can very well see both the nearby Trinity Cathedral and the whole of Chernigov, which stretches to the north to the very horizon.
For a small fee you can climb to the very top of the bell tower, covering about two hundred steps up the spiral staircase. Don't forget your camera, as the tour is worth it to capture such beauty.
The height to the top of this structure is 58 meters, which is higher than everything else around.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral is located at the address: Chernigov, st. L. Tolstoy, 92. It is on the southern outskirts of the city.

View from the bell tower of the Trinity Cathedral.

A spiral staircase leads to the very top of the bell tower of the Holy Trinity Cathedral.

Chernigov in full view from the height of the bell tower of the Trinity Cathedral.

The TV tower is the center of Chernigov. There are many private one-story houses.

Well, a few words about the city itself...
At the beginning of the article I emphasized its antiquity. That's right - Chernigov was founded at the end of the 7th century and soon became the capital of the Northern Slavs. These were the Slavs who, at the end of the 9th century, after their conquest by Oleg the Prophet (thereby), together with the lands of Chernigov, became part of Kievan Rus, then still a young, nascent state.

Railway station in Chernigov. It was not possible to leave him. But beautiful!

For a long period, Chernigov, as I noted at the beginning of the article, was second only to Kyiv in importance, holding second place in Kievan Rus.
The population of the city today is about 300 thousand people. It is divided into two districts and is surrounded by the rather winding Desna, which flows into the Dnieper already above Kyiv.
This interesting city is located north of Kyiv. If you have the opportunity and desire, we advise you to visit and compare your impressions with ours.

TOURISTS' ANSWERS:

For those who are planning in the future to visit one of the most beautiful and ancient cities of Ukraine, and previously the Old Russian state, which is Chernigov, I want to talk about those places that, in my opinion, are of great interest not only from a historical point of view, but also in in terms of architecture. Although the antiquities found indicate that the first settlements appeared on the site of the city almost six thousand years ago, official mentions in the chronicles of Chernigov date back to 907 AD. During this period of history, the city repeatedly changed hands, being subjected to destruction and oppression by foreign invaders. I could talk about this for a long time, but that’s not what we’re talking about now. So, what interesting things can you see and visit in Chernigov.

First of all, you can visit the mounds, which are located on the territory of the city. There are three of them and they are called “Gulbische”, “Nameless” and “Black Grave”. All of them were excavated at the end of the 19th century and some assumptions were made about the people who were buried there. The finds from the Gulbishche mound, which is the largest in size, were of interest because in addition to the remains of a woman, a man and a horse, as well as various utensils, an unusually large sword was found. Based on research, the owner of this sword should have been quite tall and had good physical shape and strength. There is an assumption by some scientists that the grave could belong to none other than the epic hero Ilya Muromets, who, judging by the descriptions, was associated specifically with Chernigov and its environs. Although this is just a guess. In the Black Grave mound, the remains of two men and a woman were discovered, as well as two horses and a large amount of armor and weapons of soldiers of that time, silver and gold bars, utensils and even several Byzantine coins, from which the approximate age of the burial was determined. or rather around 960. It is assumed that the burial belongs to the founder of Chernigov, Prince Cherny, in whose honor the mound is named. It is located in the Novozavodsky district of the city on Prince Cherny Street. Household and household items were also found in the Bezymyanny mound. Some of the finds from the mounds are currently in the Moscow Historical Museum.

An interesting historical monument is the Transfiguration Cathedral, which was built at the beginning of the 11th century and is considered the oldest not only in Chernigov, but also the oldest surviving and belonging to the Kyiv state. The cathedral has been preserved almost in its original form, with the exception of some extensions that were made after a fire in the 18th century. The cathedral is located on the territory of Detinets Park, in the area of Preobrazhenskaya Street.

Of great interest are the Anthony Caves, which are located in the Boldin Mountains of Chernigov. The Trinity Monastery, formerly called the Mother of God, was located in these caves.
It was founded by Anthony of Pechersk, who is well known as the founder of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, with the support of Prince Svyatoslav Yaroslavovich of Chernigov. At that time, there was strong rivalry between Kiev and Chernigov, and Svyatoslav decided to create something similar to the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, which at that time was already well known, in Chernigov. The reconstruction of the caves continued until the end of the 19th century and today the total length of underground communications is about 350 meters and has several tiers. Three churches are located in the labyrinth of caves. This is the Church of Theodosius of Totem, which is the main and largest of the existing ones not only on the territory of the Anthony Caves, but throughout the entire left bank of Ukraine, among the underground churches. The other two are slightly smaller in size and named after St. Nicholas the Svyatoshi and St. Anthony of Pechersk.
At the entrance to the Anthony Caves in the 12th century, the Ilyinsky Church was built, which became part of the Trinity-Ilyinsky Monastery. The constant construction of underground labyrinths by the monks gave rise to many rumors and legends. It was rumored that there was an underground passage from the Anthony Caves leading all the way to the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. They also said that at different periods during the capture of Chernigov, everyone who tried to pursue the monks in the underground labyrinths disappeared without a trace. But the main symbol of these caves is the “Black Monk”. This ghost, which wanders along the corridors of the dungeon, has been repeatedly seen by visitors, especially in the place where the grave of Anthony of Pechersk is located.
Scientists cannot explain this phenomenon, as well as why various equipment fails in this place. However, everyone says that caves have some effect on the human body.
Such a place was specially chosen for the construction of such a structure, and the old pagan cemetery, which is the largest in all of Eastern Europe, played a significant role in this.

In addition, on the territory of Chernigov there are a number of churches, the construction of which dates back to the 12th century and which deserve attention as monuments of architecture and architecture. This is the Boris and Gleb Cathedral, which is part of the “Ancient Chernigov” reserve and is a national cultural and historical museum.
The decoration of the cathedral are silver gates with gilding, which were made by order of Hetman Mazepa. In addition, it hosts concerts of sacred music. It is located next to the Transfiguration Cathedral on the territory of Detinets Park.

The Assumption Cathedral dates back to the same period of construction.
located on the territory of the Yeletsky Holy Dormition Women's Monastery, which is located on Boldinaya Gora and is now operational. By the way, right there on Boldinaya Gora there is a memorial complex to the defenders of the fatherland.

The Church of St. Paraskeva Friday, which is located on Hetman Polubotka Street 3, also dates back to the end of the 12th century. The temple is currently operational.

Of the churches built later, one can note the Catherine Church of the 17th century. And of course the Holy Trinity Cathedral, in which the relics of St. Philaret of Gumilyov, St. Lawrence, St. Theodosius of Chernigov and other saints rest.

In other words, Chernigov is a city with a very rich history of early Christianity and Orthodoxy, as evidenced by numerous churches. In addition, the city has several museums telling about the history, culture and art of the region, which may also be of interest with their exhibitions.

Is the answer helpful?

Chernigov is a typical Ukrainian city. In Chernigov, history is quite successfully intertwined with our days and now it is such a completely Ukrainian city with historical monuments and a slight European touch. My husband and I were passing through here and were in the city itself for only one day, so we were not able to see all the interesting places, but those that we saw, I think, are worthy of writing at least a few words about them. I will try to write a little more, because I really really liked the city and I would like to visit it again, but only for a longer period.

Catherine's Church. This temple is located in the historical part of Chernigov on the Alley of Heroes. A typical structure for Ukrainian architecture of the seventeenth - eighteenth centuries. The church was built in one thousand six hundred and ninety-six in honor of the heroic assault on Azov, which was carried out by the Cossacks of the Chernigov regiment. In order to elevate the temple, they built it on a cape that was quite high. If we describe the church as an ordinary building, then I will say that it is built of brick, the structure is cruciform, and the architectural style can be completely attributed to Baroque. This church can be considered unusual and special. Do you know why? Because it does not have a main facade. In total, there are three entrances to the temple - from the south, from the north and from the east. It is quite natural that each entrance is decorated the same way. The interior decoration of the temple is quite typical for Ukrainian Orthodox churches and I see no point in painting it.

Anthony's Caves. They are located on the territory of the Trinity-Ilyinsky Monastery, which in turn is located on the Boldin Mountains on Uspenskogo Street, 33. The monastery itself, complete with the first underground temple, was founded by Anthony of Pechersk in one thousand sixty-nine. You can get to the cave part only through a unique and very old church of the twelfth century, which is called Ilyinskaya. The caves are very interesting because they consist of four tiers, which in turn are located on top of each other, that is, it gives the impression of real floors, but only underground. The total length of these caves is only three hundred meters, which on the one hand does not seem to be very much, but on the other hand, it does not seem to be too little. The most important shrines here are certainly the cell of St. Anthony of Pechersk, as well as the tomb of the monks who were killed by the Mongol-Tatars in the thirteenth century. To these same shrines, you can also add a cross, which has been here since these caves were founded. It is definitely worth visiting the Church of St. Theodosius of Totem, which is the largest underground church in all of Ukraine. The height of the church is eight meters and forty centimeters and it is necessary to arrange church choirs inside the temple. There is also a church-ossuary, also underground. In this church, the monks who lived at the monastery were buried, but unfortunately, the church itself was abandoned in ancient times. In one thousand nine hundred and sixty-nine, the caves became part of the architectural and historical reserve of Chernigov.

Temple of Paraskeva-Friday. Girls who are not married, I give a tip - it is this saint who helps unmarried girls find family happiness and find their betrothed. This church is also called Pyatnitskaya. Previously, it was a cathedral at the Chernigov monastery. This is one of the oldest architectural and historical monuments located in the city of Chernigov. The construction of the temple dates back to the twelfth century, and this is probably why the temple is somewhat reminiscent of a fortress, since this building has quite thick walls, the windows are very reminiscent of loopholes, and massive columns further strengthen the building. The architectural features of the temple gave scientists a strong argument to assume that the architect of the times of Ancient Russia, Peter Miloneg, worked on the architectural design of the church. Throughout its existence, the temple has undergone several reconstructions, so it has reached us not exactly in the form in which it was originally created. So, for example, in the seventeenth century it was rebuilt and even built on. In one thousand seven hundred and fifty and one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two, the temple was significantly damaged by fires that broke out in it. In one thousand seven hundred and eighty-six, the monastery and all its adjacent buildings were demolished, but the church miraculously survived, but not as a cathedral, but as an ordinary parish church. During the Great Patriotic War, the church was almost completely destroyed. The restoration of the temple began in the post-war years, but ended only in one thousand nine hundred and sixty-two. Thanks to the efforts of two talented architects - M.V. Kholostenko and P.D. Baranovsky, it was possible to restore it as accurately as possible, to its original appearance. Now, the church is active. The interior decoration differs from other churches in its unusual floor, which is lined with glazed tiles of different colors and walls, which are decorated with fresco paintings.

Boris and Gleb Cathedral. This temple was built in the period from one thousand one hundred twenty to one thousand one hundred and twenty-third. It was erected on a ready-made foundation, which remained from an older building of the eleventh century. At the very beginning, there was an idea to build this building as a tomb for the sons of Prince Vladimir, and as a house church. Today, the cathedral has been almost completely preserved in its original form, with all the delights of architectural features that are characteristic of temple buildings of the twelfth century. And this is even despite the fact that the cathedral was rebuilt several times due to several destructions.
It suffered both from the invasions of the Tatar-Mongol yoke and during the Second World War, but each time it was miraculously restored by literally raising their ashes. Already in the twentieth century, the outstanding archaeologist and restorer N. Khristenko worked largely on its external appearance. Thanks to the efforts of this amazing person, it was possible to restore the ancient Russian appearance of the temple.
