The history of the monastery begins at the altar of the stone Kazan Church, where the graves of St. Alexandra, the founder of the monastery, and St. Martha and Helen used to be.

Diveevo

On the right, near the Kazan Church, N.A. is buried under an old birch tree. Motovilov is a “servant of the Mother of God and the Seraphim,” a nourisher and benefactor of the monastery.

Then you can walk past the grave of Archpriest Vasily Sadovsky, confessor of the Diveyevo sisters, to the Church of the Nativity of Christ and the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, which is the tomb of the relics of the venerable wives of Diveyevo.

Then you can head past the grave of M.V. Manturov, the faithful assistant and disciple of St. Seraphim, through the Holy Gate under the bell tower into the central part of the monastery. Standing at the Holy Gates, you will see that on the left is the abbot's building, in front is the main cathedral of the monastery, consecrated in honor of the Holy Trinity, where the relics of St. Seraphim rest.

By going around the Trinity Cathedral on the right, pilgrims can approach the graves of the first abbess of the Seraphim-Diveevsky Monastery, Maria (Ushakova), and abbess Alexandra (Trakovskaya). Here, at the altar of the Trinity Cathedral, under an old larch tree, there are the graves of the blessed Diveyevo elders: Pelagia Ivanovna Serebrennikova, schema-nun Paraskeva (Pasha Sarovskaya), Natalya Dmitrievna. Here are also the graves of schema-nun Margarita (Lakhtionova), the only Diveyevo sister who, after the closure of the monastery, lived to see its revival, as well as other sisters and clergy of the monastery. On the right will be the Transfiguration Cathedral. Even further to the right is the refectory church of St. blgv. book Alexander Nevsky.

Having left the eastern gate at the Transfiguration Cathedral, pilgrims find themselves at the beginning of a special Diveyevo shrine - Grooves of the Mother of God, and walk along it.

Those who wish to bathe in the healing waters of the Diveyevo springs at any time of the year and, by faith, receive relief from mental and physical ailments.

The Monk Seraphim of Sarov forbade the sisters of the monastery to call the Kazan Church a parish church, saying that over time it would be a warm monastery cathedral with many extensions and chapels, like the Jerusalem Temple. Regarding the Kazan Church, Fr. Seraphim said: “The Kazan Church, my joy, this will be a temple like no other! At the end of the world, the whole earth will burn, my joy, and nothing will remain. Only three churches from all over the world will be taken entirely, not destroyed to heaven: one in the Kyiv Lavra, the other... (forgotten by the sisters), and the third - your Kazan, mother... The whole place, consecrated by the exploits of Mother Alexandra and others, will rise to this temple, and the present church will remain only a kernel, as it were.”

In 2002, work began to strengthen the Kazan Church, and on the day of St. Seraphim, July 19/August 1 of the same year, the construction of new chapels of this temple began in fulfillment of the words of Father Seraphim. The temple was restored for the Seraphim celebrations in 2003.

The builder of the Nativity churches with the blessing of Father Seraphim was Mikhail Vasilyevich Manturov. Having healed him of a fatal illness and in gratitude to God for this, the priest ordered him to take a vow of poverty, sell his estate and use the money received to build a church for the Mill community.

According to the commandment of the saint, in the Church of the Nativity of Christ, an unquenchable candle burned - and since 1992 has been relit - in front of the image of the Savior. An ancient fresco depicting the Savior surrounded by angels has been preserved in the altar. The temple was re-consecrated in 1993.

Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary

Soon after the consecration of the Church of the Nativity of Christ, the Monk Seraphim called M.V. Manturov, greeting him with the words: “We did something bad to you, father; After all, we built a church in the name of the Nativity of the Savior, but you and I don’t have a church in the name of the Mother of God! But the Queen of Heaven, father, was angry with me, poor Seraphim, and said: “He honored My Son, but forgot Me!” So that’s what I thought, father, is it possible for you and me to make another church downstairs under the church? Get it done, father, and we will have two churches with you...”

The church was consecrated on September 8/21, 1830, on the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and became the second church of the Mill Convent. It was re-consecrated on October 21, 1992.

In 1991, after a many-year break, the unquenchable lamp was lit again in the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, and from that time on, the sisters read the indefatigable Psalter day and night.

The construction of the bell tower was completed shortly before the glorification of St. Seraphim. A large clock was installed on it, which chimed every hour: “Most Holy Theotokos, save us.” Later they broke down, but unexpectedly rang again before the dispersal of the monastery in 1927. Workshops were located in the northern and southern wings. In Soviet times, a television repeater was installed on the bell tower, devoid of a dome and a cross, and the Holy Gate was adapted into a garage. They were released in June 1991, before the transfer of the relics of St. Seraphim to Diveevo. Currently, the bell tower has been completely restored, and the necessary set of bells has been assembled. The wings of the bell tower house the administrative and residential premises of the monastery. A new striking clock has been installed on the bell tower.

To the left of the bell tower there is a large two-story blue building, built in 1885, during the time of the management of the monastery by Abbess Maria (Ushakova). This is the former abbot's building.

In 1902, in the eastern part of the abbot's building, a house church was built in the name of St. Mary Magdalene, Equal to the Apostles. In 1903, when Emperor Nicholas II came to Sarov to glorify St. Seraphim, at his request, a liturgy was served in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Equal-to-the-Apostles. He asked to find a priest who could perform the service in just one hour, but slowly and with reverence. Junior priest Peter Sokolov served. The king was pleased and awarded him a gold cross with precious stones.

After the monastery was closed, the church was destroyed. In the summer of 1996, through the diligence of the sisters of the monastery, the outer facade of the building was put in order, and the dome was again built over the church. On September 27, 1996, on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a cross was erected on the dome. Since 1997, restoration work has been carried out inside the church. The monastery's pilgrimage service is located in the abbot's building.

After the construction of the Nativity churches, the Monk Seraphim instructed Elena Vasilievna Manturova to buy a plot of land near the Kazan Church. On June 5/18, 1848, the foundation stone of the cathedral took place at the place indicated by the great elder. The day of consecration coincided with the feast of the Seraphim-Diveyevo Icon “Tenderness” - July 28/August 10.

In the Trinity Cathedral there was a miraculous icon of the Mother of God “Tenderness”, in front of which Father Seraphim always prayed and died on his knees. In October 1989, Trinity Cathedral was transferred to the church community. In the spring of 1990, a cross was erected on the dome of the cathedral. Divine services resumed in April 1990, when the main chapel was consecrated. Since January 1, 1991, services in the main Diveyevo Cathedral have been held daily. The relics of St. Seraphim rest in the cathedral. Above which there is a canopy built according to the model of the canopy of 1903. In the display cases behind the shrine, some of St. Seraphim’s belongings are preserved: an iron cross on his body, an epitrachelion, leather mittens, shoe covers, and a hoe. And to this day, just like a hundred years ago, people receive gracious help and healing from these shrines.

Not far from the Trinity and Transfiguration Cathedrals there is a one-story refectory church in the name of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky.

Father Seraphim prophetically spoke to the Diveyevo sisters about the appearance of a meal at this place, although during his lifetime there was a rural cemetery here. This stone refectory was built in the 90s of the 19th century under Abbess Maria (Ushakova). The return of the refectory building to the monastery lasted from 1997 to 2000. On August 1, 2000, a festive meal was held in the restored refectory church with the participation of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy of Moscow and All Rus', and on November 14/27, 2000, the church was consecrated by Metropolitan Nicholas of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas.

There was a legend in the monastery that Father Seraphim ordered the construction of a second cathedral at the end of the Kanavka on the same line as Trinity. Ivan Tikhonov Tolstosheev, who was in charge of everything in Diveyevo after the death of the saint, built the Tikhvin Church on this site. In 1991, the cathedral was transferred to the revived monastery.

Its restoration continued for several years. The consecration of the main altar in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord took place on September 3, 1998. (In the old monastery, the wooden Transfiguration Church was located in the cemetery in the eastern corner of Kanavka, where the secondary school is now located.) In the same 1998, the right side chapel was consecrated in honor of the Cathedral of the Archangel Michael and other ethereal Heavenly powers, and the left side in honor All Saints (such chapels were previously in the Tikhvin Church).

Behind the Transfiguration Cathedral is the beginning of the Holy Kanavka - a special Diveyevo shrine.

When the Queen of Heaven appeared to St. Seraphim and commanded him to found the Mill Community, She showed him how to surround the site of this community with a ditch and a rampart, and to do this without fail through the efforts of the sisters of the community. The mill was built in July 1827. In the same year, a Kanavka began to be built around the site, but the three acres of land donated for the community were officially assigned to it only in the spring of 1829. At this news, the priest ordered the sisters to get together and, walking around this land, mark it with pebbles. Then he ordered to plow the ground using these pebbles, one furrow at a time, three times. When the earth dried up, the monk ordered to dig a ditch three arshins deep (2 m 15 cm), three arshins wide, and fold the removed earth to form a shaft also three arshins high. To strengthen the shaft, he ordered gooseberries to be planted on it.

Father Seraphim said a lot of wonderful things about this Kanavka. According to the monk, this groove is the piles of the Mother of God. Here the Queen of Heaven herself walked around her, taking the monastery as her inheritance. The priest blessed to take clay from the Kanavka - for healing. Many received relief from ailments from the grass and flowers from this holy place.

Permission to restore the Holy Kanavka was received only six years after the start of the restoration of the monastery. The groove takes on the appearance commanded by the Queen of Heaven to Father Seraphim.

Kazan wooden Church in the village of Severny

The revival of church life in Diveevo began with the consecration of a wooden church in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God on April 22, 1989.

The one-story wooden church building originally housed the monastery candle workshop. Before the dissolution of the monastery, Abbess Alexandra lived there for some time. Subsequently, this building was dismantled and moved to the outskirts of Diveevo to the Kazan spring, where the priests lived. With the blessing of Bishop Nicholas, they bought this house from the relatives of the last Diveyevo priest, John Smirnov. Liturgy in the Kazan Church is served on the patronal feast day - July 21 and November 4. The rest of the time, the Sacraments of baptism, weddings and funeral services are performed here.

The appearance of this source is associated with the name of Mother Alexandra. At her grave the candles were lit on their own, from time to time an extraordinary ringing was heard, some felt an extraordinary fragrance emanating from the grave. Sometimes some kind of murmur was heard, and therefore the people believed that the spring that opened under the mountain came from the grave of Mother Alexandra. Many healings took place at this place. However, it turned out to be flooded by the waters of the Vichkinsa River when it was dammed to create a reservoir (pond).

The modern source appeared under the mountain itself and was subsequently cleared. Since the previous source has not survived, it is now considered the source of Mother Alexandra.

This is the oldest of all the holy springs of Diveyevo. It was known back in the 18th century, during the life of Mother Alexandra.

For a long time, a large chapel stood over the Kazan spring. Until 1939, prayer services were held there. There was a well in the center of the chapel. A stream flowed out from under the wall, and water was taken from it. When the chapel was broken, one of the residents of Diveevo found under the ice of a frozen spring the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, a very ancient letter. In 1943, this icon was wonderfully renewed. For many years it was kept by schema-nun Domnika (Grashkina), a witness to many miracles from the icon. Currently, the icon is in the Trinity Cathedral.

A chapel and a bathhouse were built on the site of the source. Just like at Mother Alexandra’s spring, people come here in religious processions to bless the water on holidays.

There is a local legend that in the 1960s, when the site of the future source was supposed to enter a protected zone, the military met an old man in a white robe there. The military asked him what he was doing here. In response, the old man hit the ground with his staff - and water suddenly began to pour out of it. The barbed wire was moved behind the source. Later they wanted to put him to sleep. They brought the tractor, but some part broke. At this time, the same old man appeared from behind a tree, called the tractor driver by name and said: “Don’t fill up my source.” No matter how others tried to persuade the tractor driver, he refused to fill up the source.

Now a log chapel has been installed at the source of Father Seraphim. On holidays, solemn prayers are held here. There is a bathhouse nearby.

Brief history and description

According to Orthodox tradition, the Mother of God took four spiritual monasteries on Earth under her special protection. Her earthly destinies are known - the Iveron land in Georgia, the Greek Mount Athos, the Kiev Lavra and Diveevo, on which the Queen of Heaven pours out her divine mercies, personally visiting each of these places for three hours a day.

Bird's eye view of the monastery

The history of the monastery in the village of Diveevo began in 1760, when the wandering nun Alexandra, in the world Agafya Semyonovna Melgunova, the Mother of God appeared in a dream with the words: “Here is your limit, destined for you by Divine Providence.

Live and please the Lord here until the end of your days. And I will always be with you and within the limits of your residence I will create an abode that has no equal in the whole world.

View of the Seraphim-Diveevo Monastery from the Vichkinza River

This is my fourth earthly destiny in the Universe.” From that time on, the establishment of the community began. In 1773 - 1774, Mother Alexandra, using her own funds, erected the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. In 1788, the local landowner Zhdanova, having heard about the monastery promised from above, donated 1,300 square meters. sazhen of his estate land adjacent to the Kazan Church. On this land, Mother Alexandra built several cells with a common fence, where she settled with four novices. The sisters lived according to the strict Sarov Rule, spending their days in hard work and getting up to pray hourly (that is, 24 times a day).

Cathedral of the Transfiguration

Meager food was brought once a day from the refectory of the Sarov Monastery. Shortly before her death, in 1789, Abbess Alexandra took monastic vows into the Great Angelic Schema and entrusted Hierodeacon Seraphim, known for his spiritual exploits, to take care of the Diveyevo Monastery. In 1794, Seraphim retired to the forest 5 km from Diveevo and set up a small cell there, devoting himself to an ascetic life. During his 30-year asceticism, the hierodeacon wore the same wretched clothes in winter and summer and ate potatoes, beets and raspberries grown in his deserted garden. At the beginning of his hermitage, Father Seraphim took bread from the monastery, and from his weekly portion he gave part to bears and other wild animals that came to the place of his prayer.

Cathedral of the Life-Giving Trinity

Later, Father Seraphim accepted the feat of stylite life and lived for 1000 days on a stone boulder. Having endured a three-year vow of silence, Seraphim was honored with the appearance of the Mother of God, who commanded him to come out of seclusion. For his penitential deeds, the monk received the gift of healing and insight, and people from all over Russia reached out to him for advice.

One day, landowner Mikhail Vasilyevich Manturov, accompanied by servants, visited Seraphim’s cell. Mikhail suffered from a serious leg disease. The best doctors from Moscow and St. Petersburg could not stop the crushing of bones. After the elder anointed Mikhail Vasilyevich’s feet with oil, the sufferer suddenly felt that for the first time in many years he could stand.

Bell tower

In gratitude for the healing, the landowner doomed himself to voluntary poverty, sold his estate and became a devoted disciple of Seraphim. With the assistance of Manturov, the Mill Community was founded, headed by the landowner's sister, Elena Vasilievna Manturova. In 1842, 9 years after the death of St. Seraphim, the two communities merged into one, and in 1861 the monastery received the status of a monastery. In 1903, Emperor Nicholas II came to Diveevo and talked with Blessed Pasha of Sarov, who predicted for him the birth of an heir, Tsarevich Alexy, the revolution of 1917 and the collapse of the Romanov dynasty.

Pilgrimage to the Seraphim-Diveevo Monastery - visiting Seraphim of Sarov

The main Diveyevo shrine - the Holy Kanavka - was dug along the path along which the Mother of God herself walked, appearing to St. Seraphim. The sisters dug this ditch, surrounding the Mill Community, with their own hands, surrounded it with a rampart and lined it with gooseberries. According to legend, when the Antichrist comes to Earth, the Holy Groove will be high to heaven and will block his path. Seraphim said that a pilgrim, walking along a ditch, must read the prayer “Rejoice, Virgin Mary!” 150 times. Visitors are also allowed to take with them a handful of healing earth from the ditch.

Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

At the end of the ditch there is a chapel named after Father Seraphim, where pilgrims are given “medicinal” crackers, sprinkled with holy water and blessed with prayer - this gives them a blessing. People go to the monastery to venerate the miraculous relics of Seraphim of Sarov and bathe in baths with healing water. But even an unbeliever should still come here. The Diveyevo monastery amazes with the splendor of its churches, the Trinity and Transfiguration Cathedrals are especially beautiful. In the Trinity Cathedral, behind the shrine with the relics, there are display cases where the personal belongings of Father Seraphim are kept: leather gloves, liturgical vestments, an iron cross.

General information

Three hundred years ago a monastery was founded in this area. The building subsequently became an integral part of Russian culture. It was always guided by strict requirements and had its own way of life. The Sarov forests are famous for the active development of the life of monks. They are famous for the presence of their customs and a considerable number of spiritual ascetics. Let us remember that the well-known Father Seraphim was a native of this particular area. He was a recluse for a long time. And one day, by the decision of the Mother of God, he ceased to be one. He began to meet new people and share knowledge. So, he lived for seven years. The memory of him is preserved to this day.

The monastery was founded in the 18th century. During that period, the Church of the Kazan Mother of God was erected. The holy grounds were organized under the leadership of Alexandra Melgunova and her novices. It was she who ordered Seraphim to continue his work. When the abbess passed away, the community continued to exist and followed the strict monastic laws, as before.

Subsequently, the community was rebuilt into a monastery. Already in the 20th century, Diveevo was a well-formed architectural complex. Many sisters lived in this place. The extensive complex included a refectory, a cell, an educational institution, and a medical center. Hotels were also provided. The yard was also well landscaped. He had mills and a water pumping station. In 1927, the building was closed. Seraphim wanted the monastery to acquire the status of the first women's Lavra. The clergyman planned that his remains would be buried here. Unfortunately, in the 20s its relics were lost. They were discovered at the end of the 20th century and brought back to the settlement.

Attractions

As for modern realities, many events also happened during this period. In 2003, an Orthodox holiday was organized in honor of the centenary of St. Seraphim. For the celebration, a large number of buildings underwent reconstruction. The relics of the saint are carefully protected, as they are famous for their cultural and centuries-old heritage. Everyone knows that the late abbot ordered to take care of the orphans who lived in this territory and preserve the heritage. His sister and many people went to him for advice. He provided spiritual support to many. Today there are many holy objects that are definitely worth seeing. Believers and tourists from different parts of the world come here.

The architectural structure is distinguished by the presence of a large number of objects. Most of them are significant monuments of religious significance. Thus, Trinity Cathedral was founded in 1848. The point of its construction was indicated by the great Saint Seraphim. It is made in the Russian-Byzantine style. The entire process was supervised by A.I. Rezanov. During the closure, the structure was converted into storage space. In 1989, the shrine resumed its functions. In the 1991s, services began to be held again.

In second place in importance is. It was founded in 1907. It is noteworthy that all the decor and icons were made by the sisters. The lighting of the temple was completed only in 1998. Until this time, this action could not be done. Unfortunately, the original finishing was not preserved, therefore, all repairs were carried out anew.

An integral part of the architecture is Blagoveshchensky cathedral. Its main difference is the perfection of the lines. The construction is made in a style that is as close as possible to Russian Baroque.

In 1773, another temple was built - Kazansky. The entire range of work was carried out under the supervision of Mother Alexandra. He carefully controlled the flawlessness of operations. The building is ancient.

The courtyard area is also incredibly rich. There are refectory areas, a hospital, and a small house where Paraskeva once lived. There is a bell tower and a lot of old school buildings. If you come here, be sure to examine the interior decoration of the houses. You are allowed to take photographs here if you wish. You can venerate the relics of Helen and Martha, Paraskeva, Matrona, the founder. The yard area is well maintained. Life still flows here and harmony reigns.

Holy springs

The village has a considerable number of natural springs. Such a cluster of sources in one area often causes delight. According to history, the Lord led His pilgrims to special places to build churches. In the mid-20th century, hydrogeologists in the Nizhny Novgorod region carried out a research program. Professionals have discovered an underground freshwater sea of incredible size. It stretched from Arzamas to Ardatov. In terms of area, the reservoir under a layer of earth occupied almost the entire region. It is interesting that with the birth of the complex, springs began to break through to the surface in ancient times. Through the prayers of the saints, new sources were constantly formed. Those who served God observed various visions. For example, the source discovered in the power of Kremenka received a telling name "Revealed". And if you believe the legend, then before the start of the terrible war, people saw the image of the Virgin Mary there.

If you believe information from other sources, people found icons in these areas. Thus, the face of Elijah the Prophet was found in Glukhovo, and the image of Spiridon of Trimifutsky was found in Spirinsky. The water in this area seems to respond to prayers, beginning to bubble.

The list of water sources here is huge. New ones are constantly opening. In the village of Tsygankova there is a spring of Seraphim of Sarov, in the northern part you can find streams of St. Panteleimon. Following in the Arazama direction, you will reach the underground waters of Spiridon Trimifunsky. The popular place “Vsetsaritsa” is located near Mayevka.

While staying here, you need to learn to behave competently. You will need to adhere to certain rules. The tourist is notified about this in advance. It is forbidden to shout or talk loudly. If the queue for the hot tub is of an impressive size, then you need to maintain order and wait patiently. The liquid is collected using special containers. Only then can you use individual packaging. It is prohibited to throw objects into the well or tip over leftovers from containers.
Dipping into the font is also required in compliance with certain rules. Women must carry out this process in shirts. Swimsuits are not allowed. The words of prayer can be clarified at the chapels or read on signs. If necessary, you can learn them by heart in advance. All reception points for tourists and believers are well-equipped. Reception is until eight in the evening.
All these rules are not complicated and are not difficult to follow. If they are not guided, then according to legend, a desecrated clean place can disappear forever. In order not to deprive yourself of grace, it is enough to follow the recommendations. Citizens come here to heal their body and soul.

This shrine is located above the pigeon ravine. It is ancient and took place even before the birth of the settlement. The Old River, which flows nearby, deserves special attention. Limestone was collected from its banks, which was used to build the temple. There are a lot of legends about these areas. There was a chapel. It contained a marble iconostasis. Other high-quality faces were also kept.

Previously, the water was used to bathe children suffering from various diseases. Residents washed themselves with it to relieve illness, improve the health of body and spirit. The sacrament of baptism still takes place here.

The monument is located on the Wichkins coast. Local legends say that the stream came straight from Mother’s grave. As you know, her burial took place right at the altar. Experts have long tried to unravel the phenomenon, searching for justifications. Diagnosis of soils and foundations was carried out. Numerous hypotheses have been put forward. As a result, it became clear that accumulations of snow and rain from the surface of the church were looking for a way out and could only find it under the thickness of the soil. Going a long way, the liquid undergoes various stages of miraculous purification.

In the 60s, the formation of a dam was noted. The property was flooded. After some time, he suddenly and independently appeared again. There are a lot of opinions about this situation. Some say that there was a breakthrough through the dolomite slabs, others claim that a high level of pressure arose in the dam.

On the coast of Satis there is a spring named after Father Seraphim. Its discovery occurred at the beginning of the 20th century. At that time, the forests were closed to visitors. This happened because military camps were set up. The legend says that once the soldiers saw an old man. The old man held a staff in his hands. His appearance was somewhat confusing - a white robe. There was a man standing on the very cliff. He struck with his staff, and instantly three jets rose upward. Later, they wanted to liquidate the find. But the special equipment used for this purpose became unusable, and the issue was closed.

This shrine occupies a separate place. It is located somewhat isolated. The creation was carried out according to the will of the Queen of Heaven. While staying here, you must follow all the rules of behavior. Gooseberries grow along the ditch. On the other side there are fruit trees and a path. There are well-groomed flower beds and beds around. From time to time along the road there are compact huts made of wood. It is recommended to come to this place prepared and spiritually minded.

Where to stay for the night?

There are many places in the village where you can stay overnight. If you don’t like to walk a lot, it’s convenient to organize an overnight stay in the center.
