Playa de Las Americas is the main resort of Tenerife. Playa de Las Americas - the main resort of Tenerife Swimming and relaxing on the beaches

The Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean have rightfully earned the status of an elite vacation among tourists who prefer the best of the large seven inhabited islands - Tenerife. For two decades now Playa de Las Americas holds the palm among Tenerife resorts.

History of the resort

In the early 70s, the north of the island could no longer cope with the increasing number of tourists from year to year, who were attracted by the island’s beautiful lush vegetation, healing sea air and evening walks along the wide promenade.

The government of Tenerife very quickly saw that tourism brought income to the city municipality, but the north of the island, with its choppy ocean, cloudiness and unpredictable precipitation, did not allow travelers to be received year-round.

Their gaze turned to the south, where the mountain range did not allow the cold trade winds to pass through and it rained only a few times a year. At that time, the south of Tenerife was a semi-desert with rare bushes of Canarian milkweed, which learned to exist without moisture among the stones, and several small settlements of fishermen.

The government faced a difficult task: to build hotels of various categories and create good infrastructure. Spanish and foreign investors were attracted to implement the project of transforming an abandoned strip of coast into a modern resort. This was facilitated by the appearance of an international airport 20 km from the future city, which was inaugurated in 1978 by Queen Sofia herself. For several years the airport bore the name of the Spanish Queen, until it was renamed Tenerife International Airport – South.

The city with numerous hotels, bars, restaurants, entertainment centers was built specifically for vacationers in just two decades and was named Playa de las Americas, which means “beach of America” in Spanish. Thus, the Spaniards emphasized the great feat of Columbus and his team, who discovered America. As a rule, local residents do not live in this city, but only come to work from all over the island.

Today the resort town stretches along the coast for 6 km and is visited by millions of tourists from Europe. Only 3% of the total number of tourists at the height of the season are residents of Russia. But many hotels, shopping centers and entertainment venues have recently hired Russian-speaking employees. It has also become the norm in many restaurants and bars to bring menus to customers in Russian.

“Island of Volcanoes” - this name was assigned to the island, on whose territory in the 18th century there were a series of destructive eruptions that destroyed ¼ of the surface of the entire island.

Territorial division

In the eastern part, the busiest and most crowded with many clubs and discos, young people like to spend their holidays.

On the territories of both zones there are 7 artificial beaches with imported fine sand of gray shades. All beaches are protected from the high waves of the Atlantic Ocean by stone piers. For many tourists, stone barriers become a convenient place for fishing.

On the shore you can always rent umbrellas, sun loungers, and also ride on jet skis, banana boats, “tablets”, catamarans, speedboats and snow-white yachts. But in addition to the standard beach service, loud sellers are briskly selling fruit on the beach and Chinese masseuses are offering their services.

  • Water activities in Playa de Las Americas

In addition to a beach holiday in the central part of Playa de Las Americas you can take boat trips on yachts, catamarans, and also go deep-sea fishing on small specially equipped boats from Puerto Colon - the port of refuge for all sports and pleasure boats.

The name Puerto Colon translates as “Port of Columbus”, named after the great navigator who visited the Canary Islands in 1492. on the way to the future America.

At this port, Water Sports & Charters offers a wide range of water activities, including water skiing, motorbiking, kayaking, parasailing, diving, fishing and boat excursions, which typically include dolphin and whale watching. .

Special attention deserves an underwater motorcycle, which is a moped with a spacesuit helmet attached. Within 25 minutes, those interested dive several meters into the ocean and move on a motorcycle along the rocky bottom.

There are also two water parks within the city.

Siam Park, opened in 2008, located at Costa Adeje, salida 29, autopista TFE 1 dirección Sur.

The cost of 1 ticket for adults is 33 €, for children from 3 to 11 years old – 22 €.

It is profitable to buy one ticket to visit two water parks, the cost of which for adults is 56 €, for children – 37.50 €.

In the “summer” season from May 1 to October 31, the park is open from 10:00 to 18:00, in the “winter” – from 10:00 to 17:00.

In it, Christopher Kissling managed to recreate the atmosphere of Siam, a fabulous Thai kingdom, combining the best ideas that he gleaned while traveling in Cambodia and Thailand.

Visitors are delighted by the 30-meter Tower of Power slide with a glass corridor that passes through an aquarium with exotic fish. The almost vertical downhill slide attracts thrill-seekers.

Also among the attractions worth mentioning:

    • Wave Palace– an amazingly beautiful beach with golden sand and a pool with giant waves that can accommodate 1,200 people
    • Lost City– the water town is full of various structures and mystical mysteries
    • The Volcano– the laser show imitates a volcanic eruption and is truly breathtaking even for experienced tourists
    • The Dragon– a water attraction with endless turns and an increasing pace of movement
    • Jungle Snake– in the heart of the jungle there are endless and ornate roller coaster turns
    • The Giant– the slide develops a truly gigantic speed

No less attractive Aqualand water park, located at Avenida de Austria, 15 – 38660 COSTA ADEJE, 2 km from the resort center.

In total, there are 15 attractions located on the vast territory of the water park, including: TWISTER RACER, Super Slalom, Trampolín, Spiral, Crazy Race, Twister, Tornado, Kamikaze etc. There is also a dolphinarium here.

A visit to a show with trained dolphins is already included in the price of the water park ticket.(for adults 20 €, for children aged 5 to 10 years – 13.75 €, 3-4 years – 8.00 €).
There is free parking near the water park.

Shops in Playa de Las Americas

After water activities you can visit a huge number of small department stores with a wide range of beach goods. Some even work at night.

    • A decent supermarket with low prices for food and hygiene products – "Mercadona"
    • farmers market located at Agromercado Adeje, 6 km from the resort center and open on weekends from 9:00 to 13:00
    • Fans of thorough shopping should go to capital of Tenerife - Santa Cruz, which is located 80 km from the resort

    Restaurants, bars, pubs

You can take an evening stroll along the 6-kilometer wide promenade embankment and sit in a restaurant or pub, where there is a cultural program with Freddie Mercury or Elvis Presley singing.

It is difficult to find real Canarian cuisine in such restaurants, since they mainly serve European dishes: steaks, pizza, sandwiches.

Excellent food is prepared in hotel restaurants (for example, El Patio at the Jardin Tropical Hotel).

The cheapest option is McDonald's, where you can buy a set lunch for only 6€.

    Concert hall

Many tourists definitely visit concert hall "Pyramid of Arona"(Piramide de Arona), a spectacular, pompous structure in the shape of a truncated pyramid, can be easily found on the border of the city with the small resort of Los Cristianos.

Its interior is similar to an ancient Greek temple.

Visitors here enjoy watching passionate and temperamental Spanish ballet, which bears little resemblance to classical ballet.

Bright and dynamic performances are an “explosive mixture” of flamenco and Spanish folk dances. The hall can accommodate 1,800 people and is equipped with the most modern audiovisual facilities.

While waiting for the performance, you can taste excellent classic French cuisine at the La Piramide restaurant.

Despite the fact that Playa de las Americas is considered a vacation spot for the elite public, tourists who choose economy class tours feel confident here.

Impressions from a holiday in January

Holidays at the resort of Playa de Las Americas in January are quite comfortable. The air temperature is around 20-25 degrees, sunny. Many people on the beaches not only sunbathe, but also swim, although, in my opinion, the water is cold at this time of year. In winter it is very pleasant to travel around the island, although in the center of Tenerife, in the area of the Teida volcano, roads may be blocked at this time of year due to snow and ice. Also in winter there is a high probability of strong winds or prolonged rain.

Why is it better to vacation in May?

Several years ago we vacationed in Las Americas in May, and it seemed to me that May was preferable for vacation than January. Firstly, in May the ocean is already warmer and the air temperature is higher, which allows you to spend time on the beach with great pleasure. Secondly, visiting water parks and water attractions also takes place in more comfortable conditions. I think that September and October should also be good months to visit the resort, since at this time of year there are fewer holidaymakers, but the good warm weather remains.

Vacation with children

Many parents with children fly to Tenerife in winter or early spring, when they want warmth and sun, and this is the right choice. Firstly, this is Europe, with appropriate service, food, shops, etc. There is no need to bring baby food, etc. with you. - You can buy everything here. Secondly, the flight from Moscow lasts only 7 hours, which is much less than to south-east Asia or the Caribbean islands. When traveling to the Canary Islands, you do not need to have special vaccinations and you don’t have to be afraid of exotic infections. Tenerife has a huge hotel base for every taste and budget, many apartments and aparthotels, which makes it easier to solve everyday problems that arise when vacationing with children. The developed infrastructure of the Playa de Las Americas resort makes it possible to visit interesting amusement parks and water parks with children.

Family holiday

Tenerife, to be honest, is mainly intended for family holidays; young people will find it a bit boring here. But married couples with or without children will feel comfortable here. Since often the main purpose of a trip to Las Americas is to relax on the beach, many families will already have enough wide sandy beaches and modern comfortable hotels to feel happy. Another point that vacationers like is the gastronomic component of their vacation. It's very tasty here. And for those families who cannot sit still, there is an opportunity to travel safely. Men can go fishing.

Recreation for the elderly

There are a lot of older Europeans in Playa de Las Americas. They are attracted by the fairly mild climate, the absence of sweltering heat, as well as many amenities that make life easier for older people. For example, all beaches in Las Americas are equipped with wheelchair ramps. In addition, the resort is quite calm; there are not many noisy young people here.

What to take with you on vacation?

On vacation, it is best to take casual clothes, comfortable shoes for traveling and hiking, swimsuits and swimming trunks, and sunscreen. Bring a light windbreaker with you in case of strong winds.

Where is the best place to stay?

Playa de Las Americas is a fairly respectable resort, so there are many 4-5 star hotels here. As a rule, they are located directly on the beach or very close to it. It often happens that the hotel is located on the shore, but not on the beach, so if you do not want to climb a mountain or walk 5-10 minutes to the nearest beach, carefully study this issue. The part of the city located closer to Playa de Los Cristianos is more developed in terms of entertainment and infrastructure, although, in principle, the distances here are not very large. Many families choose apartments, for example, Parque Santiago or Parque La Paz. Among budget hotels, Sol Tenerife is very good. As for expensive hotels, they usually fully correspond to the declared category, and you can choose any of them based on personal preferences or location.

What to do at the resort?

In addition to a beach holiday, Tenerife has many opportunities for entertainment. In close proximity to the resort there is one of the largest water parks in Europe - Siam Park, as well as the older one - Aqualand. There are also several animal and plant parks - Monkey Park, Eagle Park Jungl Park, Cactus Park. In the evening you can visit the Piamida Arona concert hall, which hosts musical theater performances that are very vibrant and dynamic. In some restaurants and clubs you can watch flamenco dancing. Lovers of sea walks can go on a yacht or catamaran, or go surfing. Those who have the time and desire for longer trips can visit the island's signature volcano, Teida, or the famous Loro Parrot Park.

The beaches in Las Americas are bays separated by breakwaters with gray sand. The sand is usually quite coarse, with small pebbles sometimes found. In general, not for everybody. The water, even in summer, is much cooler than in the Mediterranean Sea. There is a promenade along the beach, where there are numerous restaurants, bars and cafes. As a rule, there is a toilet on the beach. Part of the beach is occupied by sun loungers and umbrellas at a cost of 10-15 euros per set per day. Therefore, most vacationers use a portable umbrella and mats.

The bulk of the shops in Playa de Las Americas are concentrated in the area of the Pyramid of Arona concert hall and next to the Bahia del Duque hotel. Prices for everything are resort prices, designed for tourists, i.e. tall. Therefore, if you want shopping to be more intelligent and interesting, then you should go to the capital of the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. There are several shopping centers here, as well as the El Corte Ingles department store.

Entertainment

In this section I would like to list prices for some popular entertainment in Las Americas. So, Siam Park water park. The entrance ticket price for an adult is 34 euros, for a child - 23 euros. The prices are the same in Loro Parque. If you buy a double ticket to visit these two parks, you will save 10 euros. Entrance to Jungle park costs 24 euros for adults and 17 for children. Climbing the funicular to the Teida volcano - 26 and 13 euros, respectively.

Pros of a holiday in Playa de Las Americas

The main advantage of the Playa de Las Americas resort is that you can come here at any time of the year and have a wonderful rest. It has all the necessary tourist infrastructure, a pleasant atmosphere, and a variety of entertainment. I like that the resort is calm and safe, the ocean is clean, and there is a lot of variety of entertainment at reasonable prices. And accommodation on the island is inexpensive.

Disadvantages of holidays in Playa de Las Americas

The disadvantages of a holiday in Playa de Las Americas include the 7-hour flight and often high prices for air tickets. Besides this, this is just a resort place, so if you don’t get out of it, you won’t see anything educational, authentic and typically Canarian.

Is it worth visiting Playa de Las Americas?

Of course, this is a place worth visiting. Firstly, it is the most developed and interesting island of the Canary archipelago. There is European service, a good climate and an interesting excursion program. As an alternative to Playa de Las Americas, you can consider the island of Gran Canaria. The resort has a lot of Russian-speaking staff, which makes it easier for tourists who do not speak foreign languages.

Las Americas, or Playa de las Americas, is the largest resort in the south of Tenerife and the most popular resort on the island. It is located 75 km from the capital of the island - the city of Santa Cruz.

The name Las Americas did not originate in connection with America, but in honor of the great navigator Christopher Columbus and his “colleague” Amerigo Vispucci.

The center of Las Americas, around the Sol Tenerife hotel, is the most “party” part of the resort. Most of the discos and clubs are located here, and the streets remain lively until late at night. The eastern part is quite crowded during the day and evening, but by midnight, as a rule, all establishments close and tourists go to their rooms.

In January and February, this fertile shore offers ideal conditions for swimming in the sea and sunbathing.

The coast of Las Americas is administratively divided into two areas, with a dry river bed serving as the conventional border between them. The western part is called Costa Adeje, the eastern part is Playa de las Americas. Nearby is the Los Cristianos area. Despite the official division, one area smoothly flows into another. And the conventional border between them is considered to be the small mountain Chiofita.

It's no wonder that Tenerife is called "the island with two faces." Its southern and northern sides, separated from each other by a mountain range, are so strikingly different, as if they were in different climatic zones. The mountains do not allow the cold eastern trade winds to pass through, protecting the south of the island (a popular resort area) from the surprises of nature. But at the same time, the north of the island is covered with dense greenery, while the south is more reminiscent of an arid desert.

How to get there

The island of Tenerife is the only one of all the Canary Islands where you can fly from Russia by direct flight. Regular charter flights to Reina Sofia International Airport are operated by VIM-Avia and S7; you will have to spend 7.5 hours in the air. With a transfer in Europe it will, of course, take longer. At the same time, the price is approximately the same for both direct flights and connecting flights: on average 170-480 EUR.

From the airport you can get to Las Americas (about 11 km) by bus, ticket price is 2-3 EUR. Other resorts can also be reached by bus: to Puerto de la Cruz - 9-15 EUR; to Santa Cruz - 8-13 EUR; to Los Gigantes - 5-6 EUR.

Near Playa de las Americas, in Los Cristianos, there is a small port from where ships depart, connecting the island of Tenerife with the neighboring islands of La Gomera and Gran Canaria. Most boat excursions also start from this port.

Prices on the page are as of November 2018.

Weather in Las Americas

In the north of Tenerife the temperature is several degrees lower, the ocean is choppy and the rainfall is unpredictable, while the south basks in the sun and prospers. The southern part of the island is dominated by a warm tropical climate, with temperatures throughout the year ranging from +21 °C to +30 °C. The area is arid and there is little precipitation.

But it is here that you can catch the sun, having fled to the other side of the globe, when winter comes in Russia. In January and February, this fertile shore offers ideal conditions for swimming in the sea and sunbathing.

3 things to do in Las Americas

  1. After sacrificing one day of lying on the beach, go trekking in the Masca gorge (not far from neighboring Los Gigantes).
  2. Refusing peaceful sleep one night, dancing until dawn at local discos.
  3. With a wave of your hand at your slender figure, taste all the local delicacies and seafood dishes.

Beaches and entertainment in Las Americas

The resort's eight sandy beaches are protected from waves by stone barriers and allow comfortable swimming in the ocean throughout the year. The beaches on Las Americas are covered with fine black volcanic sand. They are all free, but various beach “equipment” such as an umbrella or awning will cost quite a lot. From the port of Puerto Colon, yachts and catamarans depart for boat trips, and small specially equipped boats go for deep-sea fishing.

The Aqualand water park, famous throughout the Canaries, is located in the very center of Las Americas. The entire range of water attractions for visitors of all ages is presented here, plus numerous swimming pools, sunbathing areas, cafes, etc. infrastructure. In 2008, another water park was built - Siam Park, modern, well-equipped, comfortable.

Maps of Las Americas

The nightlife in Playa de las Americas is incredibly diverse. There are many discos, clubs and bars for every taste, a lot of shows, as well as night restaurants with a variety of cuisines - both local and foreign.

Las Americas Hotels

Almost all the resort hotels were built relatively recently and are distinguished by the highest level of technical equipment, comfort and service. The oldest hotel here is the Gran Tinerfe, built in 1971. Which, nevertheless, is still considered a very worthy “four”.

Married couples with children and lovers of silence are better off settling in the western part of the resort, which is considered quieter and more respectable.

Entertainment and attractions in Las Americas

The medieval castle of San Miguel is not only a magnificent example of a fortification from the times of Spanish rule, but also the cultural center of the island. Here you can see with your own eyes a medieval knightly tournament. Nearby is the traditional carnival "Fantasia Canaria" with a picturesque folklore and dance show.

Amazonia Park is a walk through the Brazilian jungle in miniature. A huge number of Brazilian butterflies and hummingbirds are collected here. No less interesting is the Cactus Park, which features a huge variety of cacti.

Panorama of Las Americas

Wildlife lovers will certainly enjoy the famous Eagle Park located near Las Americas. This is a real tropical jungle among lifeless rocks, inhabited by lions, orangutans, tigers, crocodiles, ostriches and various reptiles, as well as a “wild” tribe of Africans who dance their dances all day long to the sound of drums. And every day from 12 to 16 o'clock in the park there is a show of trained eagles, which gave the name to the park itself.

After looking at the local beauty, you can go from Las Americas to admire other attractions of the island: in the northern part of the island there is a complex of artificial lakes with sea water “Lago Martianez” in the city of Puerto de la Cruz, a thousand-year-old “Dragon” tree in the village of Icod de la Cruz. Los Vinos. The famous “landmark” of Tenerife is the picturesque Loro Parque.

Playa de las Amerikas is the largest and most popular resort in the south of Tenerife. Every year thousands of travelers choose this place for their vacation. And this is no coincidence, since it has an excellent combination of quality beaches, developed infrastructure and hotels of different levels. Let’s try to figure out how to organize your vacation in Las Americas in this article.

Even though we did not live in Playa de Las America, we were regular visitors. After all, the entire resort life of the island is concentrated in it. There is a large selection of restaurants, cafes, many supermarkets, shopping centers and small shops. There are many tour agencies in this resort. And most importantly, it is easy to get to any city on the island from here.

Playa de Las Americas is 20 km away. and 80 km. from the capital of the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Like many resort towns, it is represented by leisure facilities and hotel complexes. On one side, Las Americas borders (along Mount Chayofita), and on the other – with (along the bed of the Barranco de Troya River). True, this border is very arbitrary, since walking along the coast, you will not notice it. Currently, all three resorts have practically merged into one large tourist destination.

Las Americas began to actively develop in the 70s of the last century. It’s hard to imagine, but back then there was nothing here for tourists. The first Gran Tenerife hotel was built in 1971. Since then it has been updated and improved many times. It is still functioning and, if desired, you can spend your holidays there. Las Americas gradually expanded and new infrastructure appeared. The emergence of an airport in the south of Tenerife has breathed new strength into the resort.

Unlike other resorts, you can meet Russian tourists in Las Americas. Local entrepreneurs are also adapting to this factor and offering menus in Russian in cafes. Some of them even employ Russian-speaking employees. But in hotels, few people know Russian. So basic knowledge of English will come in handy, or, alternatively, the indispensable Google Translator.

Las Americas has a very beautiful and well-equipped promenade. Let's walk along it a little and see the surroundings. You can see a lot of people running on the embankment.

While you are walking, look around. Check out the creative sculpture in the photo above. There are also located right along the sea. They enjoy well-deserved attention from photographers.

Another creative embodiment of thought. There are benches along the embankment where you can sit down and take a break from your walk.

And this already looks like a stone sculpture created by nature itself. She reminds me of a lion.

Along the embankment you can also find children's playgrounds.

The Las Americas promenade is a cozy place. It is pleasant to walk here, breathe the sea air and admire the beautiful Canarian landscapes.

Weather

Las Americas is considered a year-round resort. But in winter it is not hot here at all. The average air temperature is 20-23 degrees, much hotter in the sun. There is almost no precipitation, the weather is good and sunny. Many people swim and sunbathe. But in winter the ocean cools down to 19 degrees. Those who like to bathe in hot water will not have a very comfortable bathing experience. Swimming pools, which are found in almost every hotel, come to the rescue. But the tan goes well in winter. The peak season in Las Americas is July-August, when the holiday season begins for many Europeans. If you don't want crowds, it's best to avoid these months.

Next to it is Playa Honda Beach. Its main disadvantages are waves and pebbles.

And the last beach, Playa del Caminson, is located closer to Los Cristianos. It is protected on both sides by embankments, so the ocean here is calm, without waves. The beach is covered with yellow sand brought from the Sahara. This beach is often chosen by families with children who relax at the resort. The nearest Southern Airport can be reached by bus No. 111, No. 450, No. 343. The latter can also be used to get to the Northern Airport, located near Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Deserted coast turned into paradise

It’s hard to imagine, but half a century ago there was a completely deserted area and a tiny fishing settlement in this place, but the coast itself and the unique climatic conditions seemed so ideal that it was chosen for the implementation of a grandiose project to build a large tourist center. So, in the 70s, the construction of fashionable hotels and entertainment centers, shops and restaurants, bars and cafes, casinos and spas began here. To make the beaches look more attractive, they began to be covered with white sand, which was brought from the African desert, gradually turning the coast into a favorite place for numerous tourists.

A big resort

The convenient location of the resort - only 75 km to the capital of Tenerife, 15 km to the southern airport of Tenerife Sur - together with the developed infrastructure give visitors the most pleasant sensations and provide unforgettable impressions for a long time. Many people mistakenly call the entire part of the coast Las Americas, including Costa Adeje, and sometimes Los Cristianos. Don't confuse them, otherwise you may get lost. Looking at the map, you can see that Las Americas has administrative borders with Los Cristianos at the small mountain Chaofita (Montaña Chatofita) in the southern part, and the northern border with Costa Adeje is the channel bed along the Barranco del Rey gorge near Troya beach .
