Montecatini Terme. Montecatini Terme - earthly Eden Entertainment and attractions

Today, even in our country, it is fashionable to spend holidays worrying about health. Italians have a tradition of driving Ferraris or Jaguars to some prestigious thermal resort, drinking local water, swimming in hot springs and drawing inspiration for future achievements. One of these places that gives a divine spark to talent and its body is the resort of Montecatini Terme. The majesty of the parks and the splendor of the gardens, the grace and splendor of classical architecture, the flirtatious intricacy of fountains, mosaic panels and Liberty style buildings - this is what guarantees the first rave reviews from tourists.

This balneotherapeutic type resort is the “heart”. It is located in the province of Pistoia at an altitude of 29 meters, just 47 km from the city of Pisa and 38 km from Florence. Montecatini Terme is located at the very foot of the Apennine Mountains in the valley of the Nievole River. This resort area is also called the “valley of fogs”: the constant evaporation of underground thermal waters provokes a light haze of fog, which covers the foothills with the thinnest chiffon.

A little history...

It is unlikely that it will be a discovery for anyone that the therapeutic effect of hot springs was known in ancient times. The healing waters of Montecatini have also been known since antiquity. True, their official recognition took place a little later - after the publication in 1417 of a treatise by a professor of medicine from Pisa, Ugolino da Montecatini, entitled “Features of Italian baths.” And the first medicinal “buildings” of baths appeared near Mount Montecatini in 1530 and were called “Medici baths”. Although there were other names: “Round”, “Blackbird Baths” and even “Scabies”. However, the area remained swampy and not entirely healthy, so serious irrigation work was required. The construction of the Montecatini Terme resort began in 1733, with Bagno Regio built in 1773, Terme Leopoldine in 1775, and Tettuccio in 1779. Construction was especially active in the 19th century; some buildings of that period are examples of the Art Nouveau style in architecture and are of artistic value.

Already at the end of the 19th century, the resort of Montecatini Terme became extremely popular, and many prominent figures came here over the years for health and inspiration. Thus, Giuseppe Verdi often vacationed in Montecatini, and it was here that the well-known “Aida” was first performed at the Teatro Giardino Le Terme, opened in 1930. And after the discovery of the beneficial effect of water on the liver and stomach, many aristocrats and politicians in Europe “gravitated” to the “valley of fogs.”

About the healing properties of water

On the territory of the Montecatini Terme resort there are 8 thermal springs with sodium chloride-sulfate waters with temperatures up to 34 degrees. They all make their way to the surface of the earth in one place - near Ponteray Hill. Salt-sulfate-bicarbonate-sodium waters of five sources are used for drinking:

  • Tetuccio - to improve intestinal motility;
  • Regina - for kidney and liver diseases;
  • Toretta and Tamerici – for gastrointestinal diseases;
  • Rinfresco – for urolithiasis.

And the remaining three springs with salt-iodine-sulfate-alkaline waters are used during mud therapy and thermal baths.

How to get there and where to stay

The resort is located not far from Florence, so you need to fly to Florence first. You can view available flights and book tickets in the form below. It is better to stay in Montecatini Terme in one of the many hotels, having previously booked a room.

About the resort

Today Montecatini Terme is one of the most famous balneological resorts in Italy of international importance, consisting of nine thermal treatment centers located in the park area (Terme La Salute, Terme Leopoldine, Terme Regina, Terme Tettucio, Terme Redi, Terme Grocco, Terme Tamerici, Terme Torretta and Terme Excelsior).

Indications for treatment at the Montecatini Terme resort are: diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys and liver, diseases of the musculoskeletal system, metabolic disorders, respiratory diseases. The resort is open all year round, so even those who are not lucky enough to get a vacation in the summer can take care of their health in the fall and even winter.

Note that this thermal resort is the largest resort area in Tuscany, and it is not surprising that the hotels of Montecatini Terme can accommodate 12,000 visitors at a time. The town has 220 hotels with excellent service of various categories: from five-star hotels with SPA centers to tiny boarding houses. The only drawback of local hotels is the almost complete absence of medical procedures in them, since thermal springs are located in separate complexes.

Wellness programs Montecatini Terme

As in other thermal resorts in Italy, in Montecatine Terme, before the start of health procedures, tourists are first examined by doctors and specialists who speak Italian and English, who “prescribe” the necessary procedures. The duration of treatment at the Montecatini Terme resort is 10 - 20 days, including the following procedures:

  • mineral drink;
  • mud compresses and wraps;
  • thermal baths;
  • different types of massages;
  • inhalation, irrigation and injection;
  • cosmetic rejuvenation programs.

Attractions Montecatini Terme

The very favorable location of the resort town allows foreigners not only to improve their health, but also to explore almost all of Tuscany. The trip to Florence will last just half an hour, to Pisa for 40 minutes, and to Siena for 1 hour. The village of Vinci, where Leonardo da Vinci was born, is a 15-minute drive away. The house where this great Italian was born is today a museum dedicated to his life and creative path.

In addition, just 14 km from Montecatini is Pistoia, and 145 km away is the island of Elba, which has become a rather sad “page” in the book called “Napoleon”.
To see the famous medieval towers of San Gimignano, you will have to travel 104 km, while the famous one is only 45 km. Montecatini Terme itself is surrounded by tiny towns and villages in which Romanesque churches, medieval fortresses and castles, magnificent villas and palaces have been preserved in very good condition.
Well, at the top of a rather high hill, which can be climbed using a funicular, there is the old historical part of the Montecatini Alto resort. There are also many ancient and noteworthy buildings here, for example, the Church of Carmine boasts an altar plaque made in the 14th century.

Recreation and entertainment

Fans of truly Italian shopping will definitely appreciate Montecatini: shopping in boutiques, accessory stores and shoe stores is an integral part of resort life. Those who support an active lifestyle will always be able to go horseback riding or fitness, go to the swimming pool, gym, tennis court and even to the golf club. And in the evenings, the city streets are filled with young people coming from all the surrounding villages. Discos and bars are open in Montecatini until late at night.

Montecatini Terme is a small Italian town at the foot of the Apennine Mountains, which is famous for its mineral waters. There are 8 springs here, 3 of which are used for balneological treatment, and the water of 5 of them can be taken orally. Water as the main wealth is depicted on the city's coat of arms. Due to the constant evaporation of water, the air here is humid. Even in hot weather it is pleasant to be in the sun and in the shade. And droplets of water create a feeling of light fog. Therefore, the territory of the resort town is also called the “valley of fogs.”

Local clinics and treatment centers are among the best in the world.

On the territory of Montecatini Terme there are several beautiful spa hotels that do not provide treatment: for this you additionally need to contact specialized clinics. Or simply limit yourself to swimming in thermal baths and fresh air saturated with microelements.

The healing properties of local springs were discovered in ancient times. And in the 1530s, the first baths were built here, where one could soak in the mineral waters and restore health and beauty.

Today, the city of Montecatini in Italy is visited by tens of thousands of tourists every year. Some people come to admire the picturesque views, others come here in the hope of getting rid of illnesses and improving their health.

Detailed information can be found by visiting the official website of the resort city.

There are many thermal resorts in Tuscany, but the largest and most famous of them is Montecatini Terme. This is a beautiful city that was built on mineral springs; their water helps with liver and stomach diseases. Those who have no problems with this can simply enjoy the grandeur of bygone times that pervades the town. Stroll through the park or relax in the spas of a variety of hotels.

The city's most famous spa is Tettuccio Terme, built at the end of the 18th century by the Grand Duke of Tuscan Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine, son of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa. The resort is right on the main street, Viale Verdi, next to the park. On the same street there is a tourist center and the municipal building. The other two most ancient spas in the city are Regina and Leopoldina. It was these three establishments that made Montecatini Terme famous throughout Europe, a favorite vacation spot for the rich and nobility.

Thanks to its favorable location, Montecatini Terme is ideal for fans of combined tours. From here it is convenient to get to the sea and ski resorts of Italy, as well as to the main cultural and historical centers of the country.

Treatment in Montecatini Terme

Treatment in Montecatini Terme is based on drinking healing mineral water, which effectively affects the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract and respiratory system. There are eight thermal springs (up to 34 °C) of chloride-sulfate-sodium waters. Of the five waters is used for drinking, of three - for mineral baths and mud therapy.

Indications for treatment: diseases of the digestive system, musculoskeletal system, metabolic disorders, dysfunction of the stomach, diseases of the upper respiratory tract.

"Groccio Institute" is a city balneological center open throughout the year. Physiotherapeutic procedures, massages, rehabilitation courses, and therapeutic exercises in water are carried out there under constant medical supervision. A thermal pool with a water temperature of +34 °C and an open-air solarium are available.

The Excelsior Baths include an indoor pool with thermal water, a fountain, a gallery of saunas, and the latest equipment for medical and cosmetic procedures and spa programs.

The resort has a very unusual solarium: people sunbathe there while in a bath of thermal water. Most hotels do not have their own treatment complexes for balneological procedures.

Baths of Tettuccio

Another thermal bath in Montecatini, located in the heart of the resort on Via Verdi, is Tettuccio. These are, one might say, the most “historical” and remarkable baths in the city. During the foundation of the resort at the end of the 18th century by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold (son of the Austrian Queen Maria Theresa), the first three springs that were founded in Montecatini were precisely the Tettuccio baths. Today they offer all kinds of massages, mud treatments and hydrotherapy.

Entertainment and attractions

Giuseppe Verdi once loved to relax in Montecatini, and in 1930 the opening of the Verdi Theater took place here, where Aida was performed for the first time. The historical part of the town of Montecatini Alto is located on the top of a high hill, offering spectacular views of the surrounding area. There are many interesting sights there, for example, the Carmine Church with an altar plaque from the 14th century and an excellently preserved medieval fortress.

You can get to the historical core of the city, Montecatini Alto, by funicular, which, according to the locals, has been in operation since 1898. From there there are amazing views of the surrounding hills and villages, in addition, this is where most of the most delicious restaurants and cafes in the resort are located.

On Verdi Street (Viale Verdi) there is a park where everyone who comes to the waters, without exception, walks, as well as the elegant town hall building and the tourist information center. Moreover, many buildings in the city were built in the Art Nouveau style by famous architects. And just an hour’s drive away is the village of Vinci, where You-Know-Who was born.

Montecatini Terme is a city in the east of the Lucca plain in the Tuscany region of Italy, famous for its sanatoriums, medical centers, and hydropathics. On the map of Italy, the closest cities to this city are Pistoia and Lucca, a little further towards the sea - (Pisa) and Viareggio, and further inland - (Firenze). Not too far from Montecatini Terme is the port town (Livorno).

Archaeological research proves that in prehistoric times nomadic tribes of hunters lived here. In ancient times, springs of healing water were discovered at the foot of the hill on the plain of Lucca.

Later, in the 15th century, the local mineral waters were described by the doctor Ugolino da Montecatini. In the 14th century, bloody battles took place in and around the city between rulers claiming dominance in Tuscany. The Florentines won, and in 1530 they founded the first baths near the Montecatini hill, where mineral baths could be taken. These were the Medici Baths (Bagni Mediceo).

Soon, in 1554, a brutal civil war broke out again - between supporters of two Florentine families - the Medici and the Strozzi.

During the hostilities, the city was plundered, and (Cosimo I de Medici), upset by the defeat, ordered the city to be destroyed to the ground, preserving only a few residential buildings, nunneries, and the municipal building, which did not surrender to the enemies.
The city remains forgotten for a long time.

In the 18th century, interest in Montecatini revived. The Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold (Leopoldo II d’Asburgo-Lorena) orders the drainage of local swamps, diverting water from them, and the construction of new baths near the hot springs:

  1. Bagno Regina;
  2. Terme Leopoldine;
  3. Tettuccio.

The active development of tourism in the city, called Montecatini Terme, occurred at the beginning of the 20th century. Traditional public institutions for a resort town appear: hotels, theaters, restaurants and cafes, gambling houses.

Montecatini is becoming a fashionable resort, Italian celebrities come here - the composer (Giuseppe Verdi), the writer Luigi Pirandello, the composer Ruggero Leoncavallo and others, a large number of vacationers from Russia. The city becomes a place of lively discussions about politics, business, and art.

Treatment

The resort town has about 8 mineral water springs, formed at great depths - 60-80 meters. Moving towards the surface of the earth, they go through several stages of purification in layers of clay, limestone, jasper, rubble and other rocks.

There are only 4 springs on the resort territory:

  1. Leopoldina– “hard” waters with a high concentration of active substances, effective in treating constipation and normalizing the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract;
  2. Regina– “medium” waters, normalizing the process of excretion of bile from liver tissue into the intestines;
  3. Tettuccio– “soft” waters that help cleanse the liver and normalize metabolic processes in the body, reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood, and are used in the treatment of gastritis with reduced secretion and other digestive disorders;
  4. Rinfresco– “very soft” waters with a minimal content of healing substances, which have diuretic properties, remove toxic substances from the body and restore water-salt balance after physical education and sports.

Local water has a salty taste and belongs to the salt-sulfate-alkaline group, includes the following components: sodium and magnesium chlorides and sulfates, lithium, potassium, calcium, silicon salts, iodine, sulfur, phosphates, etc.

Thanks to the properties of healing waters, the activity of various body systems is normalized:

  • Digestive;
  • Respiratory;
  • Musculoskeletal;
  • Endocrine, etc.

The resort uses various methods of balneological treatment:

  • Taking mineral water internally (all 4 types of water are used);
  • Mud therapy (Leopoldinai Rinfresco);
  • Baths with mineral water (Leopoldinai Rinfresco);
  • Inhalations (Leopoldina), etc.

The city's large balneological centers are popular.

"" (Grocco) invites you to visit a swimming pool with mineral water, an outdoor solarium, physical therapy classes, massage sessions, physiotherapeutic procedures based on healing water, etc.;

Excelsior Bath– a medical and cosmetology center with an indoor swimming pool, saunas, and SPA treatment rooms equipped with the latest science; Here they take medicinal water from October to early April.

The most popular is, A medical center founded in the 18th century with mineral water outlets equipped for drinking, inviting you to take courses in mud therapy, balneotherapy, and massage sessions. The center is attended by a balneologist; visitors from April to October drink mineral water in the morning and evening before meals: in the morning - any water, in the evening - only Rinfresco.

Attractions

The city is divided into two sectors – ancient and modern. The historic center is located in the Montecatini Alto area, located on a picturesque hill. In 1898, a funicular was built to reach the old city. In the old part there are historical and cultural monuments:

  • Church of Carmine (Chiesa del Carmine) from the 14th century;
  • The current Church of St. Peter (Chiesa di San Pietro) from the 11th century;
  • Medieval fortress of the 13th century (Rocca di Castello Vecchio);
  • Buildings of the early 20th century in Art Nouveau style, etc.

The Romanesque church of del Carmine, dedicated to Saints Jacopo and Filippo, is well preserved to this day. It was built by representatives of the monastic order of the Carmelites in 1296. The church is distinguished by a simple and austere facade and a gable roof. The appearance of the church also contains Baroque features introduced during the reconstruction in 1764. The treasure of the church is a painting from 1595 depicting the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian (Martirio di S. Sebastiano) with the city of Montecatini and its surroundings in the background.

St. Peter's Church is externally distinguished by a majestic bell tower, similar to the tower of a medieval castle. It was rebuilt in the 20th century as a building for an art school, but it preserved the works of great masters of past eras:

  • "The Ascension of Christ" by Santi di Tito;
  • “The Martyrdom of Saint Barbara” by Jacopo Ligozzi;
  • “Assumption of the Virgin Mary” by Carlo Maratta.

The entire old town is located within the fortress walls of the ancient castle, rising above the Valdinovole valley. You can reach the castle grounds by cable car.
